Friday morning Beth and I left the hostel very early in order to get to La Paz airport for out 6.15am flight for our three day pampus tour. The plane was tiny and only held 28 people! The flight was only 45 minutes and we went scarily close to the mountains but made it to Rurrenabaque in one piece!
When we got off the plane we were hit by the humidity, it felt like I was back in Africa. It was lovely to have some hot weather after the cold we had been used to!
Our pampus tour left at 9.30am. There were seven of us in the group, two english guys (Hugh and Joe), an irish couple (Sinaed and John) and another irish girl (Nolee). We all got on really well and were chatting the whole way of the three hour drive to the river Beni (a tributary of the Amazon). When we arrived we watched other groups come and go as we had to wait for the petrol to arrive for our boat! The jeep bringing it had broken down.Eventually we boarded the boat and set off on a two hour trip up the river to our lodge. On the way our guide Juan Carlos showed us all the wildlife. We saw loads of alligators, turtles bathing in the sunshine, spider monkeys and lots of herons and other birds that I can´t remember the name of.We arrived at our hostel around 6pm and when we had left our bags we went five minutes down the river to a bar where we enjoyed some beers and the guys played football. We then went back to our lodge for dinner. After dinner we took a night trip on the river to search for alligators by shining our torches.Their eyes reflect the light and it was quite creepy seeing the number of pairs of orange dots we saw staring back at us!
The next day (Saturday) we set off for anaconda hunting. We were all given wellies and it was soon clear why as we kept getting stuck in ankle deep slushy mud for most of the way!We walked for about an hour until we reached a river and then we followed it for about another hour.It was early morning but still baking hot!Our guides were very persistent and kept searching for an anaconda. We all got fed up after as while and sat under the shade of a tree waiting for the group to return. However, after about 45 minutes they came back with an anaconda! We didn't expect them to bring it to us but were very glad they did!It was about 2.5m long and had already bitten John when he was carrying it back! It's not poisonous though so not too serious! We each took a turn holding it before letting it back into the river. We then made the long walk back to the lodge in incredible heat with little water! We were all very relieved to get back and out of the sun!
After lunch we went swimming with pink dolphins which live in the fresh water of the river. We found a spot where there were a few of them swimming around. However, they didn't come very close to us unfortunately, probably we were too noisy especially when other boats joined us.Afterwards we went back to the bar we had been at the previous night and played some volleyball.I haven't played since school but it was a lot of fun! After that we had dinner back at the lodge. The cooks had made everyone cakes and gave us a bottle of wine too which went down very well!We then finished the evening playing cards before the power went out at 10.30pm.
Sunday morning we went piranha fishing.Juan Carlos showed us how to throw in the line and pull hard when you feel something tugging but it was easier said than done! However, I caught three piranhas much to my groups amazement as no one else caught anything apart from a cat fish which we had to throw back!We then ate the piranha for lunch, which, were very nice!
After lunch we packed up our bags and headed back.We arrived back to the place where we left the jeeps but again we watched groups come and go as we waited for our jeep to arrive!Because of this, by the time we got back to Rurrenabaque there was no room at the hostel that everyone was staying in so we had to go to another one. However, it was closer to the bar so worked out better! That evening all the groups congregated at Mosquito cocktail bar as we had all got free drink coupons. It also happened to be happy hour with 50% off all drinks!
On Monday morning we flew back to La Paz.We arrived back at 11am to our hostel where Sarah was staying as she didn't want to come on the tour.We discovered that she had bronchitis and had been in bed all weekend while we had been in the jungle! We felt really bad that she had had such a rubbish time. The doctor had prescribed her some antibiotics and she is now feeling much better.
