Date: 20th April 2011
Place: Kho Sok National Park
Weather: Really really hot again
I woke up on the train about half an hour before our stop. When we did get off Minas friend Tuk was waiting to give us a lift to the national park. We stopped off on the way to get some breakfast and had to go through some of the towns that were flooded. A lot of people were camping on the side of the road because there houses were so badly effected.
When we got the national park it was absolutely beautiful. We took a long boat out onto the lake and were shown around and taken to a place where we all jumped out to have a swim. It was great because there were no fish around and there was a rope so the guys were climbing up the rock face and swinging into the lake.
We got to the floating bungalows after that which was absolutely amazing. They were so simple and you had to watch your footing because otherwise you would go straight through and fall into the lake. It was so secluded but stunning; it reminded me of The Beach but just without a beach which doesn't make much sense when I put it like that.
There were free Kayaks to use so we decided to head out in them to explore. I shared with Simon and we soon discovered that neither of us are very good at Kayaking. We couldn't stay in a straight line at all so it took us forever to get anywhere. We attempted to race Aimee and Neils but it was impossible so we gave up and said that we are actually winning in a race against ourselves.
There was an island that we aimed to get to, it just never seemed to get any closer. When we finally got there we were kayaking amongst the reeds and Simon got freaked out by something so we rowed away at super speed which is about normal pace really. There was also some sort of fungi on the tree which fizzed pink stuff when it was poked.
We then met Aimee, Neils, Marta and Dan at a tree in the middle which Neils had climbed so he could jump off. I attempted to get on but because it was so high Simon tried to pull me up, but unfortunately he dropped me and I fell straight into the branch below. I only hurt my foot a bit but I got some bark inside a little cut which was a nightmare to get out.
After he had dropped me out of a tree, Simon then decided to 'accidently' hit me on the head with the paddle! I then had the good idea of swimming and pushing the boat to go a little faster but Simon rowed off leaving me beaten up and in the middle of a huge lake! I swam to where he had stopped and we finally rowed back to the bungalows and reversed into the space that we got the Kayak because we had come in at such a weird angle.
For the rest of the day we were just swimming in the lake next to the bungalows and played some games like a kayak relay. Once dinner was finished we only had until 10pm until the electricity for the whole place was shut off, so no lights or anything. We all sat around on the decking having a chat and once the lights had gone out we were given a lantern and all sat around that.
Some people had gone to bed because they were tired, but some of us were still up talking when we heard a terrible scream from the girls bungalow at the end. I thought it was someone in the jungle saying is anyone out there which really freaked me out. Apparently what had happened was the door had swung open and they panicked. It could have actually been a rat because they had food in the room.
Everyone was then super paranoid and convinced there was an axe murderer in the rainforest. Carmen had woken up and stuck her head out of the window and said to Mina I think there's something in here. Mina said can she hear it scuttling but Carmen said 'no its breathing deeply and I can hear its heartbeat' to which everyone laughed and said is it Emma?! She said no I think it's a frog because it is doing little short breaths, this is now known as the asthmatic frog.
I didn't sleep well that night either as I didn't want to go into the room for a while because there was a cockroach under our mattress but I braved it in the end and fell asleep for about 4 hours.

Gran Ah--so you did see evidence of flooding. Those poor people still having to camp by the roadside. The National Park sounds lovely, and those floating bungalows pretty unique. More dare-devil stuff--climbing (well, trying to) a tree from the lake and being dropped! Glad you survived the rainforest monster, rats, cockroaches etc. Not quite 100% idyllic after all? But very, very special just the same.
