Some of Munch's (1863-1944) best-known works are to be found here, as well as in the Munch Museum. This year, 2013, is the 150th anniversary of his birth. Munch is Norway's most renowned painter but he was a tortured soul. Best known for "The Scream", his first great work was "The Sick Child", a portrait of his sister Sophie shortly before her early death. His mother and elder sister died of TB and his younger sister suffered from mental illness. Alcoholism, emotional instability and a tragic love affair resulted in a long stay in a mental hospital. After leaving the clinic in Copenhagen, Munch painted sunnier, more hopeful pictures.
