Day 16 - Thurs 13th Nov - Colonia, Uruguay
Another early start!! This time about 5.30am (with some of the boys just getting back from their night out at that time), this time in order to travel by bus for about 3 hours to the town of Colonia.
Colonia was a breath of Uruguayan fresh air as my experience of Uruguay had not been too great up until then. But Colonia was absolutely beautiful. Its a very old town with cobbled streets, a bit like Paraty in Brazil but slightly prettier I think.
We arrived at the hotel about 9am, which was a lovely old building with a courtyard patio in the middle and it had a rooftop terrace with views over the river.
The town felt like it was trapped in time and there were even lots of really old cars in the street. Strangely one of the main activities the town offersis to hire quadbikes, golf buggies or scooters, so once the guys had got their hands on them it didn´tstay quite for long! We only had one day there so I just went for a walk around the old town area, then relaxed on the roof terrace for a bit.
We went for a lovely meal in the evening and I had a great seafood pealla (no cheese and red meat!). The restaurant had a couple of old cards parked outside and they had set up a table inside one of them, and they were growing plants out of the other one! (check out the photos to see how bizarre it looked).
Some of us then had a failed attempt at going to the local casino as they would only take US$ and the cash machine wouldn´t give us any. So it ended up being quite an early night which was probably not a bad thing!
