I am now in Western Australia. To say I have had a busy and eventful couple of days since I arrived would be an understatement.
I flew in from Bangkok via Singapore on the 2nd arriving at 1.30am on the 3rd. I had spent longer in the airports than on the planes, it had been a 19 hour day and all I wanted to do was head to bed. This was not going to happen in a hurry though! The questioning I received at the airport was incredible. I was passed between three different people and they wanted to know how long I was here for, did I know anyone here, how was I getting from the airport to the city, where was I going whilst I was here, where was I staying, did I have a booking at the hostel, how had I got this long off work, where was I going next? So many questions! I then had loads of questions because of the Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos stamps in the passport and the fact I had come from Thailand. They were interested in how many drugs I had done whilst I was there and I had all my stuff scanned for drugs. This was not what I wanted to be doing at 2am, eventually I was good to go though! All down to the Asian stamps in my passport!!!
I finally made it to my hostel and after a good sleep I set out to explore Perth city. It's a really nice city, really chilled out and laid back. So different from the cities on the East coast of Australia. I had a wander around the city, along the Swan River and then into Kings Park which has great views of the city skyline. Two of the girls I met in Cambodia arrived in the evening so I met up with them and we planned our next few days. It is winter in Australia and if I had come straight here from home I wouldn't have thought it was cold, but coming from Asia it is cold so need to adjust to that, quickly!!
The next day I decided enough was enough and I headed to the dentist. I have had toothache for 6 weeks and decided it needed to be sorted (I wasn't being lazy before, just didn't fancy getting it sorted in Asia). Within 2 minutes, (and 50 pounds later), she told me my wisdom tooth needed to be removed, that day!!!! I had to go back later with the girls as I needed someone to escort me home after! I opted to have sedation pills so had to take them an hour beforehand. She told me how well they worked is dependent on how many drugs I had taken whilst I was younger, namely speed!!! I think they all think I'm some kind of drug addict in Australia. I told her it wouldn't be problem as I haven't done anything. Well.....the woman next to me had had her two pills and was fast asleep and couldn't stand unaided after! I, on the other hand, was absolutely fine, (just adding to the drug addict speculations)!!! She told me I couldn't have any more pills so I had to go in like that! I'll be the first to admit that I'm a complete baby when it comes to the dentist, I hate it! Two injections and a few tears later the tooth was out (and part of my jaw she informed me)! I then had to go bed and spent the rest of the day and night asleep. She told me I would have amnesia effects and I don't remember getting back to the hostel and some of the evening, remember all of the dentist though!!! Not the best start to Australia!!
The next day the three of us headed down on the train to Fremantle. Fremantle is a really nice town, quite European with all its cafes. Has a really nice feel to it though. We stayed in an old firestation (all the fireman have left now though). We visited the Old Fremantle Prison which only closed down 17 years ago. The tour around here was really interesting and was a good tourist attraction to do.
The next day we hopped on a ferry and headed over to Rottnest Island. We had booked a cabin here for the night and we could hire some bikes. We cycled all around the island, a good 15 miles, all along the coastline. The views were incredible. Really really beautiful! The cycling got tiring but the views were so worth it! The beaches here are lovely, can completely understand why it is such a tourist hot spot in the summer months. We even saw a whale swimming off the coast aswel, was so happy about that, my first whale in the wild!! Sunset here was also amazing, such beautiful colours! So glad we came over here. Rottnest Island is also home to the Quokkas. Kind of a cross between a kangaroo and rat and are only found on the island. They are quite tame though and come up really close to you, funny little creatures. I really enjoyed Rottnest Island.
That was yesterday and today we headed back on the ferry to Fremantle. Tomorrow we are heading back up the coast a little bit to Cottesloe beach and then on Monday am heading right down south to Albany at the bottom of Australia. It will be cold there! It is whale migration season though and this is an excellent spot for whale watching so am going to do that. Fingers crossed I see lots of them.
