The worst night ever!
I'll set the scene....
We pull into a free camp near Murwillumbah and Stuart is inside the camper making us a nice meal (pasta and soup, again!) - Stuart shouts out to me that tea is ready, so we are both sat inside the campervan and start to eat our tea...
I look up and behind one of the wood panels, I can see three long thick black legs....
"Stuart, what's that?"
"THAT'S THE BIGGEST SPIDER I'VE EVER SEEN!!!!"
We both jump to the back of the campervan and honestly this spider was the biggest thickest thing I've ever seen! Stuart thinks that it is a Huntsman Spider (which are harmless) but we are in Australia....could be anything!!!
We jump out the back of the campervan and Stuart runs around the camp trying to find an Australian to help us out. There is a French couple parked behind us and the girl is crying saying "there are spiders everywhere!!!!'.... OMG that means that there are more knocking about!!
We find an Australian man and he's telling us "it'll be more scared of you than you are of him..... you are in his territory"... NO! it's in my campervan!!!!
The Australian man comes over and even he can't believe the size of the thing! Stuart and the guy come up with a plan to knock it out the van with a long branch...
Stuart starts hitting the spider, I'm yelling at him to kill it, the Australian guy is yelling at me to not tell him to kill it.... the spider starts attacking the stick that Stuart is hitting it with... it's all madness!!
It eventually leaves into the woods...but I'm not staying here tonight! So we pack up and follow the French couple out and drive a couple more hours up the coast in search for a safe haven.... which appears to be McDonalds carpark.
I make Stuart empty the entire campervan and check every nook and cranny.... I've read that these Hunstman Spiders come in pairs... ahh!!
1am and I feel a bit safer. So we head off near the Gold Coast and pull into a side street for some kip before we can check into the campsite in the morning.
