Lovewells vs The World
Today we went on an early morning walk along the beach to see the points we had named Lovewell point, Lovewell edge, and Wave view...they were still there! And so were the sea lions. It is such a great spot.
Then it was in the car to go exploring up the Catlins coast. We went to Tunnel Hill, which is a tunnel made by hand by 70 men, it took 2 years to build. It was sure dark and wet, but quite amazing really.
Next we went to Nugget Point. We stopped at Roaring bay to see the rare yellow crested penguins...they were there, but too hard to see with the naked eye as they were far away on the beach. They are shy so you are not allowed close because they are protected. The weather at Nugget Point closed in and once we walked out to the lighthouse, we could hardly see in front of us, let alone the famous view of the the nuggets in the sea! But it was cool anyway.
We trekked back to the car through the fog,and started our journey to Dunedin. We really couldn't see much because of the fog, so we settled In and listened to How To Be A Pirate, which was great fun.
Once we got to Dunedin we headed out to do some more kiwi guardians exploring. We went to Sinclair wetlands and did a huge walk. It was really noisy with all the birds! Then we did another one along the coast at Lawyers Head, and it took rather longer than planned because the road was closed so we had to walk a long way! Dad tripped over a hidden wire and broke his shoes... Mum said it was lucky he didn't break his ankle. But we found the post and all the points of interest, as well as meeting some cool and funny dogs on the way.
Next stop was the Cadbury chocolate factory! We had lunch (even though it was 3 o'clock!) at the cafe there (delicious) and then did the mini tour. We had vouchers so it was really cheap, and we each got a bag full of chocolate bars! Highly recommend this ;;. We liked seeing the old packaging and advertisements, as well as how the chocolate was made.
After that we headed to Baldwin st, the steepest street in the world! We walked up it easily, I guess Wellingtonians don't have trouble with hills. But it would be a steep street to live in, and we all agreed we wouldn't want to. Lots of people were there rolling jaffas down the hill...that was fun to watch, but we'd rather eat them!!!
We diverted to go and find the place we were staying...a top ten holiday park in the middle of an industrial park! Oh well... the room was clean an tidy and shaped like a hexagon which was different. Plus it had bunks! We dumped off our gear, then headed to Sandfly Bay because it was time to ride some sand dunes! It was so cool. We found the kiwi guardians post, then Mum and dad dragged the kids about on a tarp so we could slide. We had so much fun that we nearly ran out of energy to grind back up the hill.
Because it was dusk we went to try and see penguins, but the mist rolled in again and we couldn't. We went to where the albatrosses live, but they had already flown off to sea. We saw a zillion seagulls instead. Still, we got to drive through some scary roads I the mist, so it was definitely and adventure!
We grabbed pies for tea and got back in time to have a swim In the pool, which was cool. We were knackered and ready for our bunk beds at the end of all that excitement, it had been a big day of walking in nature, and it was awesome.
