Chilling out in Cocoa Beach……Soberness in Savannah…….and Rallying in Raleigh
Savannah, Georgia (USA)
We arrived in Cocoa Beach mid afternoon and immediately hit the beach after catching up with the olds over Skype, who commented I sounded better and didn't look as rough as the last time they spoke to me, that may well have been straight after vegas or the New Orleans/Memphis blur.
Anyway, swimmers on it was beach time, my god its hot here, so it was literally a quick dip in the pretty wavey sea and then back to the pool at the hotel. Then it was washing…….again……boring…… We also had a great BBQ, the aussie contingent were in charge of that and a great job they did too! A few chilled beers around the pool for the most part of the evening and a raspberry daiquiri which was very nice, 1 of my five a day there lol.
The next day we left for Kennedy Space Centre. First stop the launch pad simulator, this was very cool! I could definitely be an astronaut! From here we got on the bus and did a tour of all the launch pads, this was great as the last time I was here, about 20 years ago (that makes me feel old) this was all closed off as there was a shuttle launch scheduled, which subsequently aborted 2 secs before it was due to go up. We saw the crawler that moves the launch pads, they were enormous! It was all really great, i did think i was turning a bit too space geeky as the day went on…… it was brilliant. We saw the atlantis shuttle, went down a steep slide and crawled through shuttle compartment……how old am I ! and I loved it haha! It was a shame we didn't have more time as i want to go to the Imax theatres…….. oh well a great day.
Another few hours later we arrived in St Augustine, a lovely town. A shame really we didn't have more time here as we hardly saw anything other than on our way out. Lots of little side streets with cool little shops. We trekked to the bar with the group and were then all refused beer as our driving licences weren't deemed good enough id, they lost a lot of money that night. so 50 of us trekked off to another bar which was really good, lots of dancing, live band, very very efficient bar staff and the cheapest beer on tour so far……..so yes i did take full advantage of that fact, but it wasnt just me that night………..cue a bit of a fragile bus crew the following day…….Even Creg pointed out that none of his other tours had ever had such a big night out here! Special mention for Jayden in this one, bloody brilliant hakka! Nice work my frieend.
We depart St Augustine and make our way to Savannah for the group picture, which I was to tight to pay for, so if any of the contiki lot read this and fancy posting a pic on the group, i'll get you a beer :). Savannah is the most haunted place in America and is where Forrest Gump is filmed. We had a fantastic walking tour around the place, our guide was brilliant and very funny, she had a tough crowd too, everyone was felling horrific from the night before, we all looked rough as hell to......a great day for the group pic!…….Savannah has a lovely feel to it, a great vibe and is just a lovely lovely place. We had a long walk along the water taking in all the little shops and views and paid a visit to Wet Wellies - the famous alcoholic slush place. Having said that none of us bought anything - we borrowed the wifi then left. Then we found Five Guys. Five Guys is an amazing burger joint - i have to say i think it might even be good competition for the fergburger! it was great. Tummies full of burger and chips we went to a bar with music and ordered 2 diet cokes, 3 sprites and were back at the hotel and in bed by 10. Cheapest night out so far!
Next day we left Savannah to make the long journey to Raleigh (this is not how you spell it I'm sure, but I'm being lazy) 20 mins into the journey there is accident and we are stuck on the freeway for nearly 2 hrs. so off the bus, a few freeway selfies later the footballs come out and we are playing netball and just messing about to kill time. Really good fun actually. Finally we were on the move again and got into Charlston for lunch. We eventually got to Raleigh at 6:30, quick turn around for the all you can eat buffett….then it was go karting! Great fun, but i was rubbish! What then should have then been a pretty straight forward walk home, 30mins it should have been, 90mins later i finally got back……….
Next stop DC!
