Louise and Julia's Travels
Hola! We've now mde it over the border into Bolivia. Spent our last few nights in Peru in Puno which is on the banks of Lake Titicaca. Did an overnight trip to one of the islands on the lake. Visited some reed islands on the way which were man-made and would be perhaps useful during the property boom in the Uk cos if you can't be bothered/ afford to move house then you just move your island and float along for a bit!! We stayed overnight with families on Amantani Island. Our amazing spanish skills were very useful..the longest conversation we managed to hold was about the benefits of the headtorch and we were served potatoes with rice by candlelight for dinner. The girls from our family took us to the village hall for their local fiesta, and even lent us clothes so we looked the part (photos to follow..take note the trousers-under-skirt look...reackon it might catch on out here!!) After we returned from our family experience we had to use up our Soles so had a big night out in Puno...a wise move considering we had to tackle a border crossing and travel day the next day!"! By the way, Louise had her phone stolen from the hotel so if anyone is trying to text her..tough. Please can you email your numbers to her as she had no back up!!!
After the traumatic border crossing into Bolivia we arrived into the bustling city of La Paz. Crossing the road was a bit like running the gauntlet and the witches markets were delightful selling amongst other things Llama foetuses..nice!! Louise was struck down with D&V..say no more..so I braved it on the city tour to see the Moon Valley (eroded rock formations overlooking the city canyon) and San Pedro jail which is notoriously corrupt with scarey guards who respond well to bribary. Did some shopping and had another night/morning out on the town to celebrate with the people leaving the trip in La Paz. We encountered our first road block the next day just outside of La Paz. Andy, our driver, had to run ahead of the truck waving a bat to clear the way..a tried and tested method it would seem..successful though! Arrived in Uyuni after a 14 hour jouney and have just spent the last day and night out on the salt flats. They're some 12000sq km of vast white salt. Some amazing photos to follow!! Heasding to Sucre tomorrow..only 6 days left til we brave the travelling alone!
Lots of love, Jules and Louise xxxxx
