Another day, another adventure! Today direct from the sleeper train from Chaing Mai we disembark at AYUTTHYA station. It's 5am so we spend the next hour fending off TUK TUK men and people watch until it's light enough for us to walk 6:30am we wander into the BAAN EVE and set about sleeping on our bags waiting for a noon check in. The man of the residence is pottering about he signs us in a shows us to a room. Yes bed, yes sleep, yes grateful. 10am we wake, drink coffee listening and watching as the family dance to 'brown girl in the ring' The Best of Boney M is in the CD player!! Brilliant. We hire a push bike, 1st stop the tourist information centre. We wander round a fantastic exhibition about the town we now find ourselves in. Due to lack of research and ' going with the flow ' we were unaware that we were in an UNESCO World Heritage site / town ( easy to see why) given in 1991. In 2011 the city was engulfed in the worst floods Thailand had ever seen.....that makes sense of the water mark on the wall in our rooms to waist height (we are also a floor up!) and the notice in our room apologising for appearance and discussing the hardship endured ( the room was clean and comfy). Billions of $ and 4 years on the town is functioning with the scars. Wished we had seen it before the tragedy because, we had the most spectacularly fun day! The town is beautiful and flat fortunately with glorious ancient buildings / monuments. We visited the Elephant Village (see photo) on 1st impressions treated nicer than those in Chaing Mai....The bike was genius , we spent 7 hours pedalling and looking around. We even made our way out of town to another elephant village (not so nice) and floating market. The market was so funny as everything was made of polystyrene......badly (see pics) The place was over run by school kids on a trip guessing this was their theme park! Upon return we chilled in the hammocks whilst listening with the family and various other travellers ( shout out to Dave from Liverpool) to 'The best rock ballads'....Night
