Day 28 - Birthday celebrations in Zanzibar!
Hello!
Since our last post we have moved on to Tanzania, currently in Stonetown, Zanzibar which is amazing! It's John Robbins' birthday today and we had a great african party in the beach bar last night with our group and some locals. He even ate fire, as encouraged by the dancers, bit of a sore mouth today but surprisingly not a sore head!
We started our time in Tanzania with another safari to the serengetti and the ngorogoro crater which was fantastic. The Serengetti is so huge that we did not see much, however we did spot a cheetah very close by and completed the 'big 5' by seeing the elusive leopard. We stayed in 2 unfenced campsites, one with resident buffalo (very scary at night by the loos!!) and then the next night we had a visit from a very large elephant. We were sitting around the campfire laughing very loudly and then it all went quiet as the elephant strolled on past and headed for the tents where some of the group were already asleep!! One girl got a big shock when she opened the tent door at the wrong moment to be greeted by the elephant!!
The safari highlight was seeing a pride of lions, who were sleeping in the shade of our truck. However, Louise forgot important safari rule number 1 - don't stick your head out of the window when a lion is half a meter away!! Maybe she needs some better glasses as she had simply not spotted it in time, oops!
Tonight we're out to celebrate ron jobbins' birthday (again!) by heading to the night markets and then freddie mercury's bar (he was born here). We leave Zanzibar tomorrow to head back to Dar Es Salaam and then on to Malawi - lots of driving days in the truck!
Hope all is well at home,
Lots of love xxxx
P.S - we'll try to upload some photos again soon, but the internet cafes are few and far between and generally a bit slow.
