Louise & Lucy's Trek: Round The World In 80 Days
Hello everyone! Right, after another very early start, (we had to get up at 4.30, after saying goodbye to everyone on our last tour group at 12.30!!), we headed off on our next trip to Kings Canyon and Yulara.
Spent most of the trip sleeping on the bus (although Louise didnt sleep very well because the tour guides kept trying to photo her while doing the 'fly catcher' sleeping position!). We did manage to spot our first 'herd?!' of wild camels - see photos for evidence!
We thought Kings Canyon was very good - after managing to huff and puff our way up 'heart attack hill' - 100m of rock steps! The view was fantastic, you could see for miles.
We then headed to the Yulara Resort on the way stopping to take sunset pictures of Uluru (thats Ayers Rock to you uneducated folk!). The campsite was freezing. We thought we were cold before, but this took it to a whole new level. Lucy almost lost a couple of fingers to frost bite!
Slept in a swag again. This time wearing about 17 layers of clothes! In case any of you are thinking about it, this is what you need:
- Two sleeping bags
- A sleeping bag liner
- A fleece
- A poloneck
- A t-shirt
- A long sleeved vest
- A vest top
- A pair of trousers
- A pair of pyjama bottoms/ silk longjohns (guess who was wearing which!)
- Two pairs of socks
- A woolly hat
- A scarf
Even then, there is no guarantee you are going to be warm!
Next morning we got up very early again! We did get a lie-in however, til 5am! Headed off to Uluru for a sunrise walk (well, it was more like a run in our case!) around the base... Naturally we would have climbed it, but unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the winds at the top were exceeding 25 kms/ hour so it was closed. Bummer, eh?! Maybe next time!
Next it was on to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) for another quick walk and some more photographs. From a distance they look like Homer Simpson lying on his back! We then spent the rest of the day getting back to Alice, where we have now thawed out.
This morning we got to hold some baby kangaroos! They were so cute!
No photos yet, as we cant do them here, but remember to look when we get to Cairns!
