Louise & Lucy's Trek: Round The World In 80 Days
Hello from the South Island!
We left Wellington on Tuesday and took the ferry to Picton. It was absolutely beautiful and highly recommended!
Spent the night in Nelson where we got free soup and watched Jeepers Creepers 2! Its amazing how much you start appreciating the small things in life! Although, we wouldnt recommend the movie - its even worse than the first one!
Next day we went to Greymouth - on the way visiting pancake rocks, blow holes and a seal colony. We also did a brewery tour - being the big beer drinkers that we are, we really enjoyed our 6 or 7 (cant quite remember!) complimentary beers!! Also stayed in an 'awesome' hostel called Noah's Ark - which had themed rooms! We were in the Tiger room, which needless to say, was the best!
Headed to Franz Josef Glacier in the morning, stopping on the way to do some gold panning. We dont think that we have made our fortunes, but we do have a little bit of gold for melting into 2 pinheads!
When we reached Franz Josef, we did a hike up the glacier! Very exciting, and we were both really sorry that we didnt have a bit longer to do some more climbing! We could have done a heli-hike (helicopter ride, plus glacier hike), but that would have to involve cash contributions - parental or otherwise! Donations are very welcome, please get in touch if you would like to make one!
The next day we went up over the mountain passes and down into Queenstown. We passed through the gorge that was used for the large statues of Gondor in Lord of the Rings, and saw a whole heap of people bungy jumping off a bridge - where the first bungy jump was ever done! We decided not to participate this time, as it was a bit chilly!! Honest!
Arriving in Queenstown we went out with a few people from our bus. We also tried a local burger - the Fergburger, which we have to say is the best burger ever!
After 5 hours sleep we got up to go to Milford Sound! And for those who dont know what this is, its a fjord (not a sound). The scenery was amazing, although we were a bit concerned about all the avalanche warnings, and evidence of recent rockfalls! Went for a boat trip before heading back... the sunset over the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu was beautiful...
Its very cold here, but dont worry we are keeping warm! Will post photos tomorrow after we have been luging (if you dont know what it is, you will just have to wait until the next installment!).
Cheerio for now!
