Yesterday was Easter Sunday (Happy Easter!) so, expecting the city to be really quiet like on Saturday, we had a lazy morning with a bit of a lie-in and a leisurely breakfast of toast and coffee.
We headed out into the city after 1.00pm and walked along Ave de 9 Julio, the main thoroughfare through Montevideo. The area was a lot busier than the previous day however most shops and restaurants were shut, it wasnt until we stumbled across the end of what we think was a bike race, that we realised why there were so many people around. After strolling along the street and through a couple of plazas we arrived at a bustling street market. We couldn´t beleive our eyes when we saw stalls selling pets from, tortoises and terrapins to snakes and fish, hamsters and mice, puppies and kittens and even peacocks and geese! We spent a while wandering amongst the stalls and amazingly only buying a bit of food for tea!
After we had finished at the market we walked back through the old town and the areas we had visited on Saturday before ending up at the sea front which was full of families fishing. We walked along the seemingly never ending pier before deciding our legs ached and we were starving! By this time it was nearly 6.00pm and after one last photo stop in another square with another statue of a man on a horse, we headed back to the hostel.
As soon as we got in we made a stir fry, discovering our courgette was actually a cucumber and the piece of ´fruit´ Sarah had bought earlier in the day was actually our courgette! We added our cashew nuts and enjoyed before watching a bit of rubbish american telly, eating a yoghurt and heading to bed.
This morning we were up earlier and got ready before more toast and coffee. We checked out and headed to catch a local bus at the bus station just before 10.00am. Once at the station we bought our ticket to Colonia and attempted to buy a ferry ticket back to Buenos Aires but both ATM´s were out of money! So we boarded the bus and tried to sleep for the majority of the 3 hour journey. We finally arrived in Colonia at 2.15pm and discovered yet another ATM which had ran out of money at the bus station! We checked into El Viajero Hostel and then headed to an normal ATM with money! Once again, we were starving so we headed straight for something to eat, we got ham served with a russian (potato) salad to start followed by spinach ravioli in a gorgeous tomato sauce finished off with ice cream, all for under a fiver including a drink!
After we were suitably stuffed we walked to the port to book our ferry ticket, we were told 3 times that the ferries were full and started panicking until we finally managed to get tickets with the last agency - phew! Finally we could relax and explore the town.
Colonia is a beautiful old town and it was nice to wander through the cobbled streets past the tiny cottages and quaint plazas onto the waterfront. After a couple of hours we hit the souvenir shops before watching the sunset. We returned to the hostel to get organised for tomorrows mammoth travelling day.
