The Pakistan/Indian border closing ceremony said it all! On the Pakistan side sat hundreds of men and a few women in separate stands, all dressed in white Beige or Black. On the Indian side.......women, children, families....dancing, singing, the brightest coloured sari's I've ever seen.....and smiles galore! The mood on the truck lifted the instant we cressed the border...the rain(though only a little) also helped as the temp dropped a little and we were surrounded by lush green trees and elephants and cows and....oh it was wonderful! We camped in the grounds of an old colonial guesthouse in Amritsar....with a pool! Luxury!! Being within close vicinity of a clean toilet also lifted my mood as the truckbug finally caught up with me....sore bum! Visited the golden temple the following day...super dooper sunnies required as the golden roof was blinding in the sunlight. Enjoyed a bit of R&R by the pool and was amazed by the hospitality of our hosts! Next stop Dharamsala/Mcleod Ganj, home of the Dali Lama. Very chilled out place in the mountains with more hippies than Glastonbury! Visited temples, museums, shops(oh so tempting) and ate with the locals. The population is mainly nepalese...some with some very sad stories to tell! Nice to escape the mania that is India....though it was still a little manic!
So off to Delhi.....with Delhi belly....not my most favourite truck day! We do have a loo on board but for number one's only! Was touching cloth once or twice that day I can tell you! We did plan to arrive in Delhi at 11pm but a car deciede to try and drive through a space half it's size and failed miserably! Fortunately no-one was hurt...the big orange beast had a scratch on the front....not sure how all the folk in the car escaped unhurt...but they did....so after police and hundreds of locals and money changing hands left right and centre...we camped on the lush green lawn of a pool complex!
Delhi is wicked and def on the 'Places to return to' list! Shopped in the many billions of bazaars, got really excited about a burger...which had questionable meat content, swore at touts(sometimes it's the only way) and celabrated Danny's birthday in TGI Fridays(his choice not ours!) drinking extortionate cocktails! He seemed to have a good time though! Headed to Old Delhi the following day....now that is how I expected Delhi to be! Visited the red mosque which is the biggest mosque in India and beautiful!
