Giovanni: we are up early and catch a full regional train to Napoli, a city of contrasts. As we walk away from railway station, Napoli Centrale, towards and alongside the docks, we experience some of the odour and garbage refuse issues that have attained notoriety for Napoli in recent years by way of numerous travel shows, news broadcasts and documentaries . However, as we get closer to the Bay and adjacent promenades, those issues diminish.
The Bay is in fact, stunning, with castles and forts such as the Castel dell'Ovo and Castel Nuovo hovering over crystal clear waters - that 'wow factor' again-big time!!!! Piazza del Plebiscito is both stunning and huge, rivalling Sienna in regards to the latter.
As we make our way from Piazza Plebiscito and up the major shopping street of via Toledo, we are mesmerised by the elevated glorious side streets that branch towards the skies away from the corso. After only a single day here, I am in no position to argue that Napoli's bad image is undeserved, but without a map and following our instincts, we encountered enough unique beauty to make this a must see, extended destination on our next trip.
