London 2 Cape Town
Hello everyone,
Following your clamour for more words and less photos. Here is a quick installment for you.
The trouble is I am spending many hours each day writing my extensive journal. I could just give you that, but I want to keep it as a surprise for our return when we hope to get it done with photos and other statistical information added in such as number of kilometres, amount of money given in bribes etc.
If you really want journal extracts all you have to do is complain and like a weak politician who panders to the minority (not mentioning any names) I will probably put some up.
Anyway, we are now in Luxor and have found a very nice campsite with a swimming pool and bar. We are remaining true explorers though and using the roof tent, even though we get some strange looks from the bar we are parked next to as everyone else is using rooms.
We have met a very nice couple from England called Amy and Dan who are driving the same route as us. We are catching the ferry to Sudan with them on Monday and hope to travel through Sudan and Ethiopia together, to provide some safety in numbers.
We are being treated to a pork feast tonight as the campsite owner seems to think its a bit like getting hold of a bottle of Dom Perignon during prohibition and despite telling him we had mince we needed to cook he refused to let us go and was practically begging us to try some of his pork. We are sure its because he'll get into serious trouble if he is found with any left!
We are here tonight and then getting to Aswan on Saturday to start a gruelling two day negotiation over price in order to stop us waisting all our budget on one dodgy ferry. We have a name to contact about it and the campsite owner seems to know him, although he wasn't in tonight when he phoned.
Laura, you will be pleased to know that your brother's facial hair is even better in the flesh and as we are presently having a rank facial hair competition it is likely to last for a while yet and become even more noticeable in photos. Perhaps we will provide extreme close ups and have some judgement on the message board.
Everything seems to being going too well at the moment, finding Dan and Amy, getting through the Egyptian border without incident, surviving our drive through Cairo etc etc. I worry that our luck might change especially as Churchill the nodding dog and mascott appears to have lost his head in a freak Nile Valley road accident, but fingers crossed we will be ok.
I hope that this has wetted your appetite for more, but unfortunately you are likely to have to wait till we get to Khartoum. That said my sister will very kindly be keeping our beacon flashing slowly southwards and if you log onto google earth you might see our campfire in the Sudan desert.
All the best and lots of love
Alastair and Henry
ps. Thank you very much Minnie for being so kind and sorting out my epipens, I am so sorry to have caused such trouble. Mummy and Daddy Baird, as you seem to refer to yourselves, I am sorry for being such a bloody fool and promise not to go on any more wasp nest collecting trips like the one we did last night (only joking!).
pps. Thank you for all your comments they really make us laugh and make us feel we are not alone in this.
