This afternoon we visited the Iguana Conservation Programme at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. £5 buys you a guided tour of the sanctuary, where you can feed and hold some of the iguanas. We met our guide, Eddie, and again it was just me and Matt on the tour!
On entering the enclosure, we were amazed by how many iguanas they were and how massive they grew - up to 6 feet long! The largest they had was the mascot of the sanctuary, 'Gomez', who was bright orange as it is mating season! Eddie let us feed the iguanas bananas, as apparently it is their favourite food (as well as carrots!) They ate loads of bananas, munching through the skin and all. We also got to hold Gomez for a photo.
The programme raises iguanas from babies and releases them into the local area, but this is the first year that they are trying to breed them themselves. We went to see the juvenile iguanas, and Eddie put about ten of them each on me and Matt: they try to climb to the highest point, so we ended up wearing iguana hats! Matt said I looked like a crazy old lady that school children would run away from!
After the tour, Eddie took the time to show us where we could spot hummingbirds, and we did - they were beautiful, and one of the animals I really wanted to see in Belize. We also spotted a woodpecker and a huge wild male (orange) iguana at the top of a tree taller than the hotel. He also showed us a tree fruit that always grows in pairs that the locals call 'Monkey Balls' (I'm sure you can guess why!) Apparently Belizeans use the sap from these fruits as glue, or to suffocate Bott Fly larvae if you are unlucky enough to get one under your skin. At least we know what to do if that happens now - with my luck, it's only going to be a matter of time!
