It was time for the Australian Grand Prix.... AAAAHHHHH! It was held at Albert Park so it was so so easy to get to. They ran free trams for ticket holders on race days which was awesome! Across from Flinders they had ticket stations and Formula 1 cars set up for you to go see and take photos of. I had a 4 day general admission ticket.
The Thursday was a free day, so anyone could go, but I turned up around 2-3ish and met Ryan along with his two Scottish friends both called Andy (one from Broxburn but living in Aberdeen and one from Livingston!) and they ended up being my wing men for the whole weekend.
When we heard the first Formula 1 car going round it was unbelievable. We were standing on a bridge and you could feel the vibrations through your feet, it was CRAZY. We have found out since that due to the cars being made faster that they are now quieter so it definitely wasn't as loud as we expected - we expected to need ear plugs!
We seen all sorts of races; David Coulthard done a lap, we seen Porche Carrera's race. Every day at around 2ish, the RAAF Roullettes would do an air display and then around 5ish an RAAF fighter jet would do one - the sound was completely and utterly deafening - it had to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen!
They also had a massive half pipe and had Tony Hawks skateboarding along with plenty of other people, from all age ranges! There was a motorbike stunt show, where a motorbike was on a tight rope with a girl hanging off a swing below it?! There was another stunt called the Globe of Death where motorcyclists would go in and drive round and down and upside down this globe shaped cage... It was crazy!
Watching the qualifier had to be the coolest thing ever. It was on the Saturday and of course it started chucking it down with rain half way through. We ended up by a massive TV screen for it. The atmosphere of all the Australians shouting and cheering for Ricciardio for getting the fastest time was crazy until Lewis Hamilton beat him moments later by a fraction of a second. Everyone was shouting and cheering haha. Brilliant atmosphere!
Race day was just unbelievable. Due to this being our 4th day there by this point, we figured out where was best to watch the actual race. We found a hill at turns 11 and 12 which had a TV screen too. At 3.30pm they done the drivers parade where all the drivers were driven around the track in little vintage cars. They then done the RAAF Roulettes and Fighter Jet air display which was the best one yet. There was even a Qantas Jet Flyover! Crazy scenes. No one knew where to look next!
Then the race started and bloody Hamilton was out by the second lap - VERY GOOD. After that we were hoping wee Button would come in but he never made it. When the race finished everyone piled onto the track! We walked right round, getting pictures at the grid, checkered finish line, the Melbourne sign.... It Was just amazing!
The boys were such a good laugh, we had dinner together on the Saturday night and I was meeting them at their hostel in the morning before heading to the track. It was like a wee West Lothian party every day haha. They definitely made it for me, I'm gutted they have left. Can't beat Scottish banter!
Would LOVE to be at the Grand Prix in ABU DHABI ...... I'm addicted now!
