After only spending a couple of days in Bangkok due to it not really being my scene as it was far too touristy and expensive, we caught a direct bus across the border at Poipet to Siem Reap. The bus journey was very easy and short, (only 8/9 hours) and crossing the border was a lot more simple than some posts I have read. After getting to Siem Reap our bus company offered a free tuk tuk to our hotel, the only catch was that the tuk tuk driver then questioned you about what you are doing during your stay and suggest they pick you up the next day at a certain time, it is very difficult to say no as they don't get paid for that ride.
We decided to buy a 3 day pass for the temples of Angkor because one day definitely would not have been enough! We hired a tuk tuk driver for the day who was very friendly and drove us to all the main temples for only 5 dollars! The temples were just as amazing as I had expected but it made me very sad as it is clear that the temples are getting rebuilt and more and more areas are getting closed off. However, we were lucky enough to climb the majority of the walls. On our first day at the temples there was a huge thunderstorm so we took cover under a stall with some locals as Alex drank his coconut, they were very friendly, just like everyone else! Our tuk tuk driver wasn't put off at all about the rain even though he had to drive with no cover whilst we had a shelter and he took us to every temple on that route so that we got our money's worth. At the end of the trip we decided we would hire him again for the next day as we knew he was reliable, even though the motorbike did break down and we were stuck in the thunderstorm for 20 minutes! Overall I loved Siem Reap, not just because of the temples, but also because of the city. The streets were lined with a mixture of restaurants, bars and local food and the nightlife was more lively than Bangkok's! On one strip we walked down to get to our Indian restaurant we walked passed heaps of 'happy pizza' restaurants and every tuk tuk driver on the street comes up to you offering mdma, coke, heroin and weed. It was actually rather scary.
