After Siem Reap we headed down to Battambang on a 4.5 hour bus ride. Battambang was just a quiet riverside city but it was beautiful and I loved it. The buildings were all very french and all the cafes served french food, which was delicious! We hired a tuk tuk driver for $8 to take us out of town to the famous bamboo train. I would definitely recommend visiting the bamboo train to anyone who is passing through Battambang! It was something different to experience and it was quite an adrenaline rush! It is sad because they have already put in plans to get rid of the bamboo train and build a proper railway along the same tracks. After the bamboo train, which took about an hour overall, we visited the killing caves. The walk up was very tiring but it was not as long as I was expecting, to get to the top of the mountain it took 30 minutes. The actual killing cave wasn't that impressive and it was very sad to see all the human skeletons but there were many other caves in the region that you could explore which was fun. Not many tourists visit the other caves so Alex and I had a fun time exploring the little passageways. The final stop on our day trip was the bat cave. It is said that 5 million bats fly out of the cave at 530pm to go hunting so we sat down and waited for 20 minutes. The bats started leaving quite slowly and the cloud got heavier as the time went on. We watched the bats for 15 minutes leaving the cave and they were still going so we got into the tuk tuk to watch them over some rice fields. It was really weird to see the bats, they just looked like swarms of bees and we followed their trail for a long time! We were in Battambang over the days that the king was visiting, I never saw him but there was a lot of celebrations which added to the atmosphere. We ate on two nights at the river markets at this street food stall where an adorable little girl was our waitress. She was so sweet and clever so we tipped her 1 dollar each and it made her day, she was so happy! Overall Battambang was a beautiful town and I really enjoyed my stay there.
