24th Jan - We got up early to catch the bus to Mission Beach. Unfortunately when we got there the bus driver told us that he wasn't going to Mission Beach as there had been a cyclone and the roads were closed due to flooding. We didn't know what to do! He said the furthest he was going was a place called Townsville. We had no idea where it was but we thought it was a bit closer to mission beach so we should go.
A guy on our bus let us use his iPad to book accommodation. We couldn't find anywhere that had vacancies so we were starting to worry. Then I borrowed someone's Australia book and came across a hostel that had a room free for us! We were so excited about having a room all to ourselves as we hadn't had one so far.
When we got to Townsville, the lady who ran the hostel picked us up. She was a hill billy version of someone's nan. We got taken to our room which had a tv!!! It felt like you were in a proper bedroom and not a cold unhomely looking dorm.
We headed out for a walk and bought some pizza, chips and garlic bread to cook in the hostel as there was an oven! Well, that was the worst pizza and chips ever tasted. I don't think we have ever been so disappointed in our lives. When we went to our room, we were disappointed to find that someone else had been put in our room!! But we still stuck a movie on, and I fell asleep in about a minute. Brilliant.
25th Jan - We got up and headed to the sea for a stroll. Just the three of us. It was a boiling day... One of those sweaty ones I may have mentioned before. Nothing interesting happened, as we discovered Townsville is the s***test place on earth. Worse than Reading. And that says a lot.
We headed back to our (now) humble abode, armed with curry sauce, chicken and riceeee. Oh yes, it was curry night! I forced the girls into letting me watch the Murray V Federer tennis game in the Australian Open. I was glad to watch Murray beat Federer, as I had predicted.
26th Jan - Australia day!!! We were gutted that we weren't in Cairns, like we had planned. We had a big lie in, got up and headed to the sea front. The whole town seemed dead! There was no one around. We had been talking about having a BBQ on the beach before leaving Aus so we thought what a better day to have it than Australia day. After we had our BBQ we met up with the two Irish girls we'd met in the Whitsundays and went to a club. It was full of Aussie chavs. We hadn't seen any chavs since being in Aus but clearly they all lived here in s***sville. It was most possibly the worst club I've ever been to!
