15th Jan - We arrived in Rainbow beach as we were going to Fraser Island the next day. Our hostel was so lush and had a pool so we were gutted we weren't staying longer. This always seemed to be the case! We packed our bags for our 3 day trip and had a 'sort of' early night.
16th Jan - We woke up bright and early for our Fraser Island trip. We had a safety briefing, met our group and then checked off our food on a list to make sure we had everything. We were doing a tag along tour where you drive 4x4's and follow a tour leader. There were 4 jeeps on our tour. Unfortunately we were in the lead car which our tour guide, Jonesy, was driving so we would have to swap with someone else in another car to drive. Our car group seemed all really friendly. We got in our cars and headed to Fraser Island. We spent 4 hours driving along bumpy roads and miles of sand. It was so surreal driving on a beach! We finally arrived at a beautiful lake called Lake McKenzie. It was a freshwater lake, so Hannah was happy as she's allergic to salt so she could actually put her head in the water. We had a swim and then had a nap on the beach. We got woken up just as everyone was leaving and headed back to the jeep. We carried on driving and arrived at our campsite for the next 2 nights which was on the beach. When we got out of the jeep, we ran to secure a good tent in the middle of the site, as we didn't want to be on the edge because of the dingoes at night. We had been told to be careful of the dingoes as they are vicious and are known to attack.
We then made dinner in our groups. On tonight's menu was steak and potato salad. We cooked dinner on cooking stoves in our campsite and ate together as a group. We got on the goon and headed to bed for an early night. Before we went to bed, I said to Jonesy really casually 'we've got crisps and sweets in our tent.. Is that ok?!' he replied: 'no way!!!! Get them out of your tent!!' (because of the dingoes) so we ran to our tent and put them in the jeep for the night.
17th Jan - Jonesy woke us up at 6.30am and told us to get ready for a busy day ahead! We made breakfast which was scrambled eggs on toast with a glass of orange juice. Mmm! After breakfast, we hopped back into the jeep and headed to Champagne Pools. It was a big rock pool. We then headed to Indian Head which was where Captain Cook discovered Australia and thought he saw Indians. We climbed to the top of Indian Head which had some amazing views over Fraser Island. We then headed to a shipwreck and saw a washed up whale on the beach. It was huge and absolutely stank as it was rotting away. We headed back to camp for dinner. On the menu tonight was chicken stir fry. Omg it was incredible! We had some biscuits for dessert and had some drinks with everyone before heading to bed.
18th Jan - We had a bit of a lie in (we got woken up at 7.30am) and had some cereal and toast for breakfast. Today was our last day on Fraser Island :( We got back in the jeep and drove to a freshwater lake called Lake Wabbi. We had to walk 40 minutes in the bush and over sand dunes to get there. When we arrived, it was so worth it!! It was definitely the best lake out of the two we'd seen. We stayed there for a couple of hours before we had to head back. Jonesy told us to come back a different route, so we followed the directions he gave us. We were walking for nearly an hour until we suddenly came across a map. It looked like we were miles away from where we should be so we stopped and asked the only person we had seen where we were. They told us that we were heading in completely the opposite direction to where we should be! So we had to head back the way we came in the boiling heat with no water!! We trekked for over another hour worrying about how late we would arrive back and what everyone would say. At one point I heard a dingo's wolf whistle and I shouted to the girls 'Right, eat any food you have in your bags NOW!' without saying to them that I just heard one nearby as I knew they would panic! We carried on walking, but my flip flops broke so it was a real struggle walking on the burning hot sand. I was swearing every 20 seconds. As we were halfway back, Hannah shouted 'Lizzy! Look!' and I turned around and saw our tour leader running toward us. Much to our shock, instead of asking if we were ok... he ran straight past us without even saying a word! We were absolutely fuming!! As it was his fault we got lost in the first place as his directions were so bad. We continued walking.. Tired, thirsty, sweaty and hungry. When we finally arrived back at the jeep (a whole 2 hours after leaving) we were greeted by booing. Wasn't exactly what we wanted to hear after what we'd just endured. Hannah started shouting 'F*** off! F***...off!!!!!' to the other jeeps. When we got into our jeep, no one said anything!!! Not even our tour guide. They just simply looked away and didn't even bother asking if we were alright. This made us even more angry! Luckily Hannah turned on the waterworks just at the right time when Jonesy quickly hopped out of the jeep. He suddenly realised that it wasn't our fault what had happened and because he felt sorry for us he bought us ice lollies.
We stopped off to get food and swapped places with people in the other jeeps and we drove back along the beach and back to the hostel. It was so much fun and great to actually drive again! I've really missed it! Though I'd definitely prefer a 4x4 than my little ford fiesta at home.
When we got back to the hostel, all of our group went out as it was Jonesy's leaving party. It was karaoke night at our hostel so we drank there. They announced that they were giving free cocktails to the first 5 people who got up and did karaoke. So of course me and Hannah couldn't resist and got up twice and sang 'Aqua - I'm a barbie girl' and 'katy perry - last Friday night'. We'd do anything to get a free drink!!! Or in this case, two! After the karaoke finished, we headed to the beach for a beach party. We took our box of goon and sat by a fire on the beach drinking. I had one of those 'how lucky am I' moments on my own... staring at the waves in the sea and gazing up at the incredible stars while sat on the beach. It was simply amazing.

Mumi A touching story, Liz x
Maddie Story is only a little (a lot) exaggerated... there were 32 of us at the lake that day and you were the only ones who managed to get lost. Maybe you need to take responsibility for your inability to listen over blaming others.
