Cape Trib, Crocs and Cassowarys
We arrived in Cairns on Monday first impressions were the abundance of green landscape after the dry areas of South Australia and the unbelievable humidity. Now I sweat in English heat so here felt like I would evaporate. As we checked in we booked up a trip that took us north of Cairns to the rainforest to do the next day!
That night we were treated to a full Aussie BBQ with emu, kangaroo, crocodile and barramundi fish. All very tasty and this made amusing by the nightly entertainment of Didgeridoo playing by the guests!
We were up early to get on the bus for our trip that started with a river cruise down the Daintree river where you may or may not (as we were reminded) see a croc. Our guide pulled up and we spotted a medium sized croc, then further down the bank we saw a baby.We then saw a MASSIVE croc nicknamed "Scarface".He was only about 20 metres away at first and then he turned and headed our way and submerged himself so we had no idea where he was!Next thing we know and the reeds in the river are all moving and he is right next to us!The guide shouted for everyone to get away from the side and to keep all arms and elbows well within the boat.Very exciting.
We then headed to the Daintree Rainforest said to be 120 million years old (the Amazon as a comparison is 7 million years old) for a rainforest walk where we saw lots of interesting trees and some pretty huge spiders. Then it was time for lunch, no croc this time, just a chicken wrap!
Next was Cape Tribulation, which was beautiful and really unspoilt which was refreshing. We then headed to Mossman Gorge for a swim.We got to the gorge and once in and over the rocks I figured it would be fun to swim up the side of the rapids and then be carried down stream, the current was pretty strong so it probably wasn't that safe but it was great fun.
Once dry we headed to Port Douglas for a look around.Lucky for us we saw a cassowary on route, which are very rare and now endangered. They look a bit like emus but have a blue head and some weird flat horn on it.We arrived back at the hostel just in time to get the quick bus to the local pub to claim our free meal of chilli con carne (6/10 for that meal).
We're up early tomorrow to head on the Greyhound to Mission Beach for the next holiday within the holiday.
