Liz & Chez's Big Adventure
So where were we when we last wrote to you?....thats right we were heading off for a bit of detox at the yoga sanctuary. Well, I don't know about detox per say (although we were surrounded by virtuous, crazy souls who were paying good money to eat nothing but clay shakes and herbs and have twice daily colonic irrigation!) Instead we stayed in a very cool dormitory with mats on the floor surrounded by mosquito nets, ate expensive, slightly pretentious food and went to a yoga class run by a girl who whispered directions in what we think was intended to be a calming, get in touch with your inner soul way but was actually so quiet we had to keep sitting up to see what everyone else was doing so we could copy them! It was good though and the complimentary exotic beach was restful. Trying to get off the resort was less restful. We were supposed to catch the twice daily boat from Koh PagnNan to Koh Samui but to get there we relied on the taxi boat to take us back to the main port. There were about 5 taxi drivers sat around chatting, smoking and playing the guitar and none of them seemed particularly fussed about taking us anywhere. There is no point, we have discovered rushing Thai people so we just joined them and got out the playing cards. Eventually with only 20 minutes until the boat departed we persuaded them that now really was the time to take us (the men had now started to gamble with our cards and one was very put out that we took our cards back because he had just lost all his money), they finally agreed and we caught the boat by the skin of our teeth (again!)
Koh Samui was nice, not our favorite island but we treated ourselves to a full on wrestling match with some Thai ladies aka a back massage - agonizing but soooo good! This we followed with a night of dancing. We actually got thrown out of one bar by a stroppy ladyboy wannabe which we found highly hilarious! On a more somber note though, Koh Samui was filled with prostitution and child exploitation which broke our hearts to witness. There were still exhausted children of 6/7 years selling wares at 1-2 am.
From Koh Samui we went on to Koh Pi Pi. We LOVED this island! It is basically one big holiday camp for backpackers and we were staying in a big dormitory which was party central. On our 1st night we were invited to join everyone for one girl's birthday celebrations. All started well, then we bought sang som buckets which, from our last post card even you know are not clever! This led on to a Finnish girl challenging Cheryl to a round of Thai boxing in a ring set up in one of the bars. You have never seen anything like it, Liz was so proud! Cheryl fought well, threw in her fair share of punches and despite her bleeding nose even did a few jump kicks! The crowd (most of the island) loved it and the one round turned into about 4. Cheryl had a bit of a following that night - mostly male naturally!
So onto Malaysia, we had no idea it was so big and we've only got 5 days!
