5th December 2009 - 8th December 2009:
We decided to take the short trip across to Phi Phi as we didn't want to miss out on the most famous of the Thai Islands, however little did we know that Phi Phi was SO beautiful and a great place to party.
One of the best things about this island is that you can literally walk around the whole thing - well you kinda have too because they have no cars whatsoever. There were beach parties every night with fire skipping, fire limbo and fire hoops. Thankfully we were not drunk enough to try the more dangerous ones - a girl actually got burnt whilst trying the limbo - but Liza did pluck up the courage to jump through a flaming hoop just as we were leaving.
We stayed in a really dodgy hostel the first couple of nights which was literally built on a hill beside a water treatment centre and meant we weren't treated to the best view in the world and so changed hostels for our last night.
On one of the days we attempted to mark our respects and walk to see the Tsunami Village, which we understood was created in memory of the victims. However after about an hour of climbing numerous steep hills it was still nowhere to be seen and given the temperature was well over ninety degrees we sadly gave up before we both passed out with heat exhaustion.
We met up with Linda & Nina and spent a couple of days chilling on the beach with them but they had just finished a heavy party week and were about to start their scuba diving courses so were on their best behaviour and stayed off the drink the entire time we were there.
Towards the end we took a day trip around the Island - stopping in a couple of spots to do some snorkelling and saw lots of colourful tropical fish. We also stopped off on what they call Monkey Island, which funnily enough it got its name because it is full of wild monkeys.
Whilst there people started feeding the baby monkies with nuts and pieces of fruit - which was really cool - but after awhile some of the larger monkeys started to get aggressive and almost attacked this one guy who wouldn't give them anymore food - which was really not cool - although kinda funny as he screamed like a girl, ha, ha!!
We then stopped off on the actual island where the movie The Beach was filmed and had lunch there, which was really nice sitting on amazing soft white sand and looking out at the crystal blue sea. However as you can imagine it was full of tourists wanting to get a look at this now famous Beach so unfortunately meant it wasn't quite as peaceful and picturesque as we would have liked.
On the way back we also stopped off at Bamboo Island and just got in the last of the sunshine before we headed back to the main Island, only stopping briefly to watch the sunset over the mountains - all in all it was a really good day out.
Our last day we just chilled out for a couple of hours on the beach while we waited for our boat but it was so hot that Liza decided that her fair skin could not handle anymore sun so opted to seek shelter under a sun umbrella. Unfortunately, despite her best efforts the sun still manage to get to her legs and she ended up in a lot of pain that night, resulting in a full application of cooling aloe vera aftersun needed on everywhere between her toes and her knees.
Phi Phi was an amazing place with great food, beaches and a really cool party vibe and alongside Koh Tao was our favourite Thai Island. Our only regret is that we didn't spend longer here but sadly we are running out of time and only have a few days left to finish off the rest of our Far East trip before heading to Australia, however in Phi Phi we couldn't have asked for a better way to finish our Thailand adventure.
