23rd November 2009 - 28th November 2009:
We were determined to do all the major islands around Thailand to be sure that we did not miss anything and so Koh Samui was our next stop.
On our first day we got caught by some street sellers giving out scratch cards and if you got three matching symbols you could win a prize. Surprisingly we "won" the top prize of either a holiday, a laptop or £1k cash, but in order to claim it we had to listen to a 90 minute presentation on their vacation club - after which we would be able to scratch away the card and reveal which of the three prizes we had won!!!
Before anyone says anything yes we know it is a big scam, yes we knew our chances of winning the good prizes of a laptop or cash were nil, whilst yes we knew the chances of winning the not so good prize of a holiday from the same vacation club company - that would have like a hundred different terms and conditions that meant we would never be able to use it - was 100%, but still stupid curiosity (damn you curiosity!!) got the better of us and we stayed.
Our presenter was an ex-policeman from Scotland and he kept reminding us that he wouldn't be promoting the benefits of the club if he did not believe in them himself. Although after almost 7 hours we really didn't give a hoot how honest he was (and by this time Liza was close to killing someone) and we just wanted them to tell us how much it cost so we could politely decline and leave.
They finally advised us that we could buy a membership for a reduced rate of £10,000. We more than politely declined, collected our prize (yep you guessed it, the holiday!!) and left.
However Sean was momentarily considering looking into the cheaper £2,500 membership but Liza's reaction to his suggestion was basically 'You can do whatever you want with your own money but I ain't paying a penny to those lying, cheating…. …'- you get the message!
The rest of our stay was a bit like Koh Phangan, chilling out on the beach and eating….. or that's what we think anyway!!! To be honest we have been so lazy typing this blog that it has been well over a month since we were actually in Koh Samui and, given we didn't take any pictures so cant use them to jog our memories, we can't for the life of us we remember what the hell we did, ha, ha!!!
We did remember a few minor thing from our stay, one being in the restaruant attached to our hotel which, for some reason unbeknown to us, had Karaoke sessions that didn't start until about 1:30am in the morning and to say the singer was dreadful is an understatement.
We also got our first experience of the advertising vans that drive around the streets with huge speakers telling people about the latest Thai boxing match and nightclubs. The voice was always the same and we think was trying some sort of hypnotysing approach by saying things like 'Go now… do it!'. It was really weird and funny and we were just waiting for a Little Britain voice to start saying "Look into my eyes, look into my eyes"!!!
Overall Koh Samui was ok but we would certainly not go there above somewhere like Koh Tao which was ten times better.
P.S. If we ever do obtain back our memories of the "Lost days in Koh Samui" we will make sure that we update the blog.
