After more chatting and more food (this time dim sum) Andy & I left Melbourne on our Great Ocean Road-trip.
Although we'd booked a small Toyota Yaris, Hertz had upgraded us to something similar to an open top tank! (And while a removal roof in summer is great, it can not be removed when it's pouring with rain like it will be this wk!) But least the indicators and windscreen wipers were the right way round this time.
We left slightly later than planned so rather than admiring the scenery along the highway from Melbourne to Port Campbell we admired the complete pitch blackness. However in the headlights we did see some frogs, a fox like animal, a possum and a koala!!!! Yay!
And having decided to be spontaneous (or more accurately having been indecisive) we thought we'd just drive as far as we felt we could then find somewhere to stay - with it being such a popular tourist destination, there were bound to be loads of places..... We managed the drive to Port Campbell, arriving around 9.30 to find everywhere was shut! And my Aussie phone had no signal! And the pub had no wifi! Perhaps it was a good job we had a big car - we might be sleeping in it! Luckily I remembered where the hostel I'd stayed in when here 6 years ago was and luckily I knew where the back door was and was able to get in, call reception & book us beds for the night - which turned out to be the family suite which slept 6!
Phew! Must get more organised! Tomorrow we are going to see the twelve apostles & admire the views of the Otaway National Park & Apollo Bay - and will hopefully see more koalas & kangas!
