As planned we were up fairly early this morning and made use of the Internet at the hostel to book accommodation for the next 2 nights - I didn't want to get caught out again!
We then went in search of breakfast. Coming out of the hostel we realised we were right on the beach - it was so dark last night we'd not seen the sea just 50m away at the end of the road!
So round the corner from the hostel was a beach side cafe which made the most amazing poached eggs and avocado - just what I was after!
It was still raining as we left and as we arrived at Lock and Gorge, a look out point on the Great Ocean Road. And it was still raining when we got to the 12 Apostles (which is now only 11 Apostles as they are eroding away!) But by the time we left it was brightening up, and by the time we'd double backed to 'London Bridge' Arch it was bright sunshine! From there we drove back to Port Campbell for water & snacks and then back to the Great Ocean Road heading towards Cape Otaway lighthouse. A gorgeous drive along the coast & up into the hills, we stopped at a few more look outs along the way, and we were lucky enough to to see kangaroos and koalas too!! I got some good pictures of koalas, the kangas were a bit too fast & then too far away :(
We dropped down into Apollo Bay late afternoon. This time we'd already booked a motel so we decided to drive a further 45km in land to Forrest and Lake Elizabeth. Due to the rain it was quite misty on the drive up into the hills and with the tall trees it had quite an eerie feel, bit like the road to the end of the world! And we'd probably mistimed it. The guidebook said to arrive at dusk to be able to see platypus, however as we arrived at the car park it was getting quite dark! So we didn't get further than the car park as walking in the bush in the dark probably isn't advisable! but the smell of eucalyptus in the car park was very powerful! And Depending how early we get up tomorrow we might head back, but then there is still so much to see along the coastline!
We arrived at the motel around 7 checked in & headed to the local a pub for dinner & a bottle of local wine. I finally got a picture of a kangaroo, unfortunately it was on Andys plate :(
