After a smelly and bumpy bus journey, where we had to get off in the middle of the night to change buses (which noone actually told us about!), we finally arrived in La Paz. We had heard that when you get to La Paz, the view is just amazing straight away, which we thought was a little optimistic, but it was so true. When you look out onto the backdrop of the city, you can see mountains going on forever, which is pretty cool.
The first night, we stayed in a hostel which used to be the house of the former President of Bolivia or something like that, so now we can say that we´ve stayed in their house! But the hostel was pretty lame..the beds dipped in the middle, and the showers were outside, which was crazy as the temperature was already freezing! It´s really weird here though because if you´re in the shade or if it´s at night, then it´s so cold but if you´re in the sun, it´s so hot! There´s no inbetween! The first night, as this hostel was really quiet, we decided to go to the hostel around the corner which is a bit more lively and we turned up just in time for Happy Hour! Good timing eh. The second night we moved into this hostel for a few nights, which was really good fun. We turned up and knew so many faces from our travels and it was really good to see everyone! The food at the hostel is pretty damn good and quite cheap, so we ended up just pigging out most days and obviously even after a couple of steak sandwiches, we´d fit in pancakes! Good times. I can´t really remember most of what we did...but I think the general routine was just chilling out in the hostel, and then getting ready, heading onto Happy Hour and then out to a club. Most were pretty good but one was a bit too electro for us! But we still had a good time!
When we got there, we were told that we would be in separate rooms because there wasnt room for us all in one. Turns out Alex got the better deal - Lissie was in a room full of smelly men, and she was in a room full of girls! But Lissie ended up spending most of the time in that room anyway, so it wasnt too bad! We met two really nice girls in Lexs room, who we ended up going to Rurrenabaque with, which was cool. They had GHDs, so Lissie actually straightened her hair one night - was so weird seeing it straight after 3 months, she didnt actually like it!!
We also went to the Witches Market, which is about a 15 minute walk from our hostel, and it sells weird things like dead llama foetuses, potions and little statues that are meant to mean something....was a bit freaky seeing some things, but it wasnt actually as weird as we´d though it´d be! Most of the shops just sold the same thing, which consisted of Bolivian hats, jumpers, blankets, bags, jewellery and scarves! We ended up buying a few things, including a hat each so we look pretty funky.....obviously! We looked around the town a bit, but due to the altitude, as La Paz is so high up, we get really out of breath just going up the tiniest hill or a flight of stairs! We also found we were getting out of breath when we talked or ate! Crazy!
Thats about it for La Paz I think, but we cant leave this blog without mentioning the crazy people here..... The women wear about 80 skirts, aprons and 10 rugs on their back, and then decide that it´d be a good idea to top it all off with wearing a bowler hat?! They look mental!
