Friday 8th January.
We were a bit rough around the edges when we woke up at 9, but we had to get up and get out. We had booked to go up the Sydney Tower eye, which is the tallest building in Sydney at 300m. It has a 360 observation deck at the top so you can see the views of the city. We had a time slot and had to be there between 9-11. We got there in time and took the lift to the top. We were given 4D glasses and went in to a big room with a cinema screen and watched a short clip about Sydney. I had to look away when the 4D shark was on the screen which Kirsty was laughing at me for. We ditched the glasses and went to have a look at the views which were really good, and they have information screens to tell you about what you can see from you are standing. After we finished up the tower we headed back to 'The Rocks' down by the harbour for some lunch. They had a street food market on so we got a pork roll from one of the stands for $10 which was delicious and half the price of the restaurants in the area. We sat in the square to eat, listening to a busker. We were getting pestered by pigeons though and couldn't stop laughing at how cheeky they were. We even tried to move seats but a seagull swooped down and nearly landed on me. We finished laughing at the random situation we were in and decided we wanted to see Darling Harbour and had heard a ferry was a good way to see it. We found out we could buy a two hours sightseeing cruise ticket, which takes you around all the ferry stops and you can see everything from the water, so we went booked that for 1pm. We had a great time and it was so bumpy at one point against the waves we were messing about saying if we sunk there and then, we were going to get eaten alive. We were just going passed shark beach where they put big nets up to keep the Sharks out, and they have to take them down every winter to replace them because of the holes in them. I told Kirsty there was no chance she was getting me to that beach! We pulled in at Watsons bay which was really pretty. There were two Pelicans walking across the sand, and some people trying to learn to surf, and failing. We went to a few different stops and it wasn't until near the end of the trip I realised we hadn't put sun cream on. I was horrendously sunburnt on my arms and thighs. Massive error. I always wear sun cream, but we didn't expect to be on the boat or for it to be so sunny. The breeze from the sea meant I hadn't felt how hot it was. We got back on the train, (which is like the London Underground, but mostly overground), and I don't know how we managed it but we missed our stop. Completely went passed it and didn't even notice. Kirsty asked me if we had missed it but I just said, no we couldn't have. Then quickly realised we were on our way to Ashfield which is one of the suburbs away from the centre. An elderly Australian couple behind us thought it was hilarious and reassured us we could get off at Ashfield and go back to central. We saw the funny side and were laughing about it all the way back. We got showered and changed and headed straight back out to meet Kirsty's old uni friends, Jamie and Katie. I used to go and stay with them at uni so it was nice to meet up with them. We went to Opera Bar which is next door to the Opera House, and goes along the harbour. It was absolutely rammed and we struggled to find somewhere to sit, but it was a really good view. We went through five bottles of champagne and were definitely all drunk but we had a really great night. Me, Katie and Kirsty had to run to get the last train home. More train drama. We caught it just it time and we left Katie at our stop, then got back to the hostel and crashed out.
