Lisa's Big Adventure
Marvellous Majorca
I've just got back from a fantastic weekend in Palma de Majorca, Spain. Palma is the main town on Majorca (or Mallorca as the Spanish call it). Flew out at 5pm on Friday afternoon with Matt and Kel and we arrived there and were at our hotel by about 9pm. The first thing we noticed was that it was a gorgeous hotel - and it only cost us £25 each per night. We were right on the water and straight out in front of us were thousands of yachts. It was just gorgeous as at night time, the lights were twinkling away. Actually, it really reminded me of Monte Carlo - now I'm sounding like a world traveller aren't I? Our room was on the 3rd floor and we had a balcony overlooking the water. We headed out to grab something to eat and then sat on the balcony for a while, just taking in the beauty of it, and relaxing.
Woke up Saturday to a beautiful sunny day and headed out to walk around to the magnificent cathedral just around the bay from us. The cathedral was just fantastic, huge and beautiful. It sits right on the water also, and dominates the landscape. After this, we boarded the Palma sightseeing bus and got to see the town of Palma and also got taken up to the castle where we jumped off. The castle didn't have much in it, but well worth it for the views over Palma. Got some great photos as you can see on my photos page (thanx Matt!). We then jumped back on the bus for the rest of the circuit, and left it to have lunch at about 3pm! After that, we headed back to our hotel to relax for the rest of the afternoon. Kel and I lay on the deck chairs by the pool and napped and read for a few hours while Matt entertained himself with the newspaper and watching CNN on TV.
In Spain, they don't eat until about 9pm so we headed down to the bar at the hotel and had some wonderful sangria before heading up the road for some paella. It was Matt and Kel's first visit to Spain, so we had to do the traditional spanish things. Had a meat paella this time (I've had the seafood and chicken ones before) which was yummy and some nice chocolate mousse (ok, not spanish but yummy just the same!). Went back to the bar at the hotel for some more conversation and sangria before going to bed.
Sunday morning was also beautiful so we checked out of the hotel, leaving our bags there to collect later. Went for a walk to find the nearest beach (Matt and Kel hadn't seen a beach since June last year so were really wanting some sand). The beach we found was about a half hour walk and not the most attractive but it didn't really matter. Matt amused himself playing in the sand while Kel and I lay down and napped, soaking up the sun. We stayed there for a few hours (I managed to tan a little too!) and then headed back into Palma for lunch. This time we found the other traditional spanish food, tapas. Tapas is when you get small amounts of various things. I had crab, spanish meatballs, potatoes and spanish omlette. Yum!!! We then went for a wander around town before going back and lazing around the pool at the hotel again. By 5:30 it was time to get a bus to the airport. Thankfully this week, there were no delays and I was back on my air mattress by midnight.
I had a fabulous weekend, and really, really needed it again. I would definately go back to Majorca, but probably in April/May as it would be warmer and you could go swimming. I can see that it would be buzzing in Summer with the British and German tourists. And I'll tell you what, I can also see why Chrisopher Skase ran here! It is seriously beautiful, a real tropical paradise.
