Lisa's Big Adventure
Verona
We were given the option of stopping at Verona, enroute to Venice, something which we all jumped at. Verona is most known for being the setting of Shakespeare's most famous play "Romeo and Juliet" and I was interested in checking out this town that was making it's name by drawing on it's association to a piece of fiction.
Verona itself is a lovely little town with gorgeous architecture, lots of little cafes and great shopping. The first stop in the city was to see Juliet's balcony, the biggest tourist attraction. The balcony was small and similar to how it has been portrayed in the various movies but really I just found it tacky. On the walls underneath and around the balcony, people have scrawled their and their lovers names in paint, pen and on post its. It just looks messy and, as I said, tacky. Yes, Romeo and Juliet is all about the price of love but I felt that the balcony and the graffiti cheapened a great work of literature.
After leaving the balcony, I wandered the main street of Verona, shopping I have to admit as the clothes were just wonderful. No money was spent but it was completely enjoyable to look at nice clothes and think about if money was no object... Stopped to have a gelati - oh the Italians and their gelati - and by then it was time to re-board the bus and head into Venice.
I am pleased that I did get to go to Verona because despite the tackiness of Juliet's balcony, it is a very pretty little town and would be very easy to spend a while wandering around and spending money in the shops.
