Lisa and Simon`s Around the World Tour
Hopping across the islands of the South Pacific, we flew from Easter Island to Tahiti.
After spending the night on the airport floor with all the other penniless backpackers, we spent about an hour on Tahiti (overrated and more importantly horrendously expensive) and took a boat to another of the islands in the group, Moorea.
Had decided where we wanted to stay, and once off the boat took a ride on 'le truck' round the island. Le truck is the islands bus service so called because it is, well, a truck. Dirt cheap (the only thing here that is - apart from baguettes that are limited by law to 45 pence). They mainly seem to be a flat back lorry that has had a bench put along each side with a wooden canopy thrown over the top. Still, beats a taxi.
Found a place to stay next to the beach. Called a bungalow, but more of a shack. 'Atmospheric' would be one way to describe it. Incredible views though and for four days we barely moved. After being hard on the sightseeing and doing trail for a good couple of months it was heaven.
To ensure we got back to Tahiti for our onward flight we left early and took a boat back across. As our flight wasnt until the early hours of the following day we had a day to kill. As it was Sunday, all the shops were shut (hurrah), so too though were the waterfront cafes and bars (boo). I was all for finding the biggest hill and hiking up it, but Lisa was not so keen. So we changed into the smartest (and cleanest) clothes we could find (not easy) and went to the Sheraton (premier league luxury compared to our DMs league shack) and crashed by the pool for the day. Posh yes, but not as 'atmospheric' as our hut, so we were ready to leave when it was time to go. We didnt complain about the lift the management made one of the staff give us to the airport. They couldnt possibly have any of their guests catching 'le truck'. Brill.
Next stop the Cook Islands.
