Lisa and Simon`s Around the World Tour
Crossed the border from Brazil to Bolivia. Almost immediately you can see the difference in the level of wealth. Bolivia is one of the poorest countries on the planet - and it shows! It really did feel like we were in bandit country!
Upon crossing the border, we took the 15 hour long night train journey from Quijarro in the east of Bolivia to Santa Cruz in the centre.
Santa Cruz is quite a wealthy Bolivian City mainly due to drugs trafficking, and full of designer clothes shops and posh cars, mixed amongst the poverty.
After gut ache, botty burps and a stubborn cold we stocked up on a variety of medications and spent the rest of the time relaxing before flying to Sucre.
Sucre sits in a valley surrounded by low mountains at an altitude of just less than 3000 metres. It is the first time on the trip that I have felt miles away from home. So far, the local dress and culture is quite westernised, but in Sucre the locals all wore traditional dress - see photos. Bolivia is by far the most special place visited. The local people are so friendly.
Simon has been quite ill through this leg of the journey so has not done much sightseeing. He did, however, manage to drag himself out of bed to visit the Dinosaur Tracks - trails of dino footprints found in a quarry in Sucre.
Leaving Simon in bed watching Bolivian TV, I went on an excursion to Tarabuco, a predominately indiginous village an hours drive from Sucre. The place is famous for its Sunday market, where the Bolivians travel to sell their handmade weavings and lama wool sweaters. I just had to buy a few things and the bartering was great fun.
Next stop is Potosi.
