Lisa and Simon`s Around the World Tour
Have spent 2 days on the Salar de Uyuni which is the worlds largest salt flat (remians of a prehistoric salt lake). As you can see from the photos it is pretty amazing.
We were extremely lucky because it had been raining for three days prior to our arrival. The water does not filter through the salt and floods the desert so that the four wheel drive jeeps cannot take tourists out.
By the time we arrived, the water was only an inch deep so we were able to go out. The water on the salt flats made it even more spectacular because you could see the reflection of the clouds and the mountains in it.
We stayed the night on one of the Islands in the middle of the Salar and as we were approaching it, the sun began to set. It was amazing, the colours of the sunset reflected on the white salt for a spectacular sunset.
The accomodation we stayed in was extremely basic and made of mud and straw. There was no electricity or hot running water and was extremely cold. We had to sleep in small dorms of the same sex, it was like being on a school trip again.
The next morning, most people got up to see sunrise but I didnt want to get out of my warm bed. When everyone left, I got out of bed in my pyjamas to go to the toilet outside. When I was out there one of the hosts shut the outside door. Of course when I tried to get back in, it was locked and nobody answered when I knocked. Fifteen minutes later when I was kicking the door in frustration the woman finally opened the door and I jumped back into bed to get warm. Everyone else found it funny because I was too lazy to get up for sunrise.
When I had recovered from my hypothermia, we walked up a volcano on the Isalnd. It was hard going and kept wondering how I was going to manage on the Inca Trail. The view was lovely when we reached the top and well worth all the effort.
The flats were a real surprise. We knew nothing about them before we left, but they have got to be one of the highlights of South America. Truly mindblowing. Wow!
