Byron Bay,
Byron Bay
On 26 December, Boxing Day, I woke up early and ate breakfast at the hostel before taking the bus to Byron. The trip takes probably about an hour, but about 10 minutes after I got on the bus driver took a meal break. Many of the passengers had been on the bus all night, so they should have an opportunity to have breakfast. After that we drove to Byron Bay. I sat next to a girl on the bus who I talked to a bit. When she heard that I was from Denmark, she asked if Britain was a part of Denmark ... hmmm not exactly, but Denmark is indeed a small country, so you cannot expect that everyone knows it. She asked more about it and I explained a little and said that we are only approx. 5 mill. people in. Quite surprised, she asked if we still had shops so you could go shopping (!!!). I had to explain to her that we are relatively civilized and that we have big cities like Copenhagen, where you can find some shops, if that's what you're looking for :-) I will not judge anyone, but it was really hard not to laugh at her question and I could also see they guy sitting next to us, was trying hard to keep a straight face ... But but, always good with a little entertainment on the bus (much better than the movie the driver chose to show about life on the savannah in Africa).
Finally arrived in Byron Bay and my hostel where I share a room with 9 others - fortunately it's better than I had imagined, and most backpackers are pretty respectful towards each other. It was raining like crazy so i went for a short trip to the supermarket to shop for dinner and breakfast and then back to the hostel. I chatted with a German girl who gave advice in relation to Sydney and Blue Mountains. Otherwise it was a quiet evening, and the rain kept me inside the room (like most others) with my book.
Today I woke up even more rain. It is beginning to affect my mood a little, as I had hoped for a little beach and sun-time here in Byron - it seems that the entire east coast is getting more rain than usual this season, so we must just learn to live with it. Oh well, after breakfast I went for a walk around town to shop a little and to my great pleasure I found a book-exchange. Completely soaked by the rain, I returned to the hostel for lunch, and now thinking about going to a cafe to pass time. The weather forecast for tomorrow doesn't look very promising, so it will be another day of reading and relaxing before I continue on my trip. I am looking forward to going to Tassie and spend time with friends and celebrate New Years with someone I know J.
