Next stop was Pucon which is home to the fairly spectacular 2,847m high Villarrica Volcano and the huge glacial lake below. The town has quite a ski-resort feel (although not as nice as El Calafate) and some great restaurants. The plan the next day was for some of the group to get up at 3.30a, (yes, I did say that!) and hike up the volcano. We were told it was much harder than the W trek back in Torres del Paine so I knew i would struggle and decided to have a 'me' day instead. My plan was to get my hair and pedicure done and then meet Bill for a picnic shop in the supermarket before heading to the lake with our food and wine and having a relaxing day. Everyone's day was scuppered. The hikers came back at about 8am as they had got so far up the volcano when there was a huge white out. It then started to rain so I spent 4 miserable hours in the hairdressers (another very brave moment for me!), was 2 hours late to meet Bill (but we couldn't have stuck to our plan anyway to be honest) and then a group of us went for a wander to the lake and around the town. In the evening, myself, Steve, Michelle and Ian went out for dinner to a parillada where we basically chomped our way through a cow each - fantastic! Anyway, no photos from Pucon (except for the volcano warning signal sign) as we couldn't see the volcano on the 2nd day. Will try and steal some from someone else as it was an impressive sight. Ah, talking about the warning signal, it was like an air raid siren and went off - twice on one day! Scary! The first time was at midday when is apparently sounded like a noon day gun. The 2nd time was at 17.05 and if I'm honest, In panicked a bit as it seemed like such an odd time for it to go off. Anyway, nobody came screaming and panicking to kick us out of our room so all was good.
