The following day was a drive day back across the border to Argentina and onto to El Calafate which is the nearby town to the immense Moreno Glacier. We all went out for dinner at an all you can eat buffet (still loving those places!) and a beer or two in an Irish bar. Next morning we set off to the glacier national park to see the mighty Perito Moreno Glacier. It's the size of Buenos Aires at 30km long, 5km wide and 60m high. It's one of the only glaciers in the world still advancing (the others are Franz Josef (been there!) and Fox in NZ) and I think that's it. It's travelling at about 2m per day which is pretty amazing stuff right?! Anyhooo, it was really was quite incredible. We went on a tour which stopped at a little farmhouse on the way that had a resident baby alpaca (sooooo cute, I want one!) and some sheep wandering around. When we got to the park, our very sprightly and super, over-enthusiastic guide (it was honestly like being on a school excursion!) took us on a walk where she claimed the glacier was 8km away. This was hard to believe as it looked pretty close up. Anyway, we then got a boat to get really close up to it and it was so vast - and very blue! You could constantly hear it groaning and creaking and every so often, a huge shard would splice off and crash into the water creating a mini tidal wave. Very impressive and another one of those awesome moments! Did a few walks to see it from different angles and when we were finally glaciar'ed out, we went back to the hostel. (Amazing hostel by the way)
In the evening I went out for a very nice dinner with Steve (date night!!) where I had enough lamb to feed an army (a hotplate arrived with about 6/7 pieces of meat on it!). I couldn't believe it was a portion for just one person! Got b back to the hostel where some of the boys were downing wine and for some reason felt compelled to join them.Warning bells should definitely ring when people start trying to feed you wine from a 2 litre bottle!
