Surprisingly I managed to survive my first few weeks in work and I feel a lot better now that I am in the swing of things.I have learnt a lot, but a most of what I need to learn depends on the guests and their particular problems.I have my own computer code, which allows me to access the computer so I can check people in and switch people around the sites (which is no mean feat, there are hundreds of sites) and whenever I successfully help a guest I become more confident in my role.
Most of the guests are friendly and interested in why I am here, as my name badge states that I am from the UK.Some think I am Australian with one guest saying I sound like Olivia Newton John! This really amuses me as they can see I have a badge that says I am from the UK.The guests don't seem to have much geographical knowledge outside of the USA and those who realise I am English assume that I am from London.Although one lady does surprise me when she walks through the doors as, as soon as I finish my spiel (i.e. Hi there welcome to Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort…blah blah) she immediately says to me "you're from Liverpool aren't you?.I'm impressed :o)
Another guest also recognises my accent - he has family in Liverpool and we have a discussion about the city and Liverpool Football Club. He is a huge fan and when I tell him I went to see the 2005 Champions League Parade and I saw Gerrard & Co up close, he is delighted.Rick also joins the conversation and seems pleased that the guest is so chuffed.Maybe this will get me a good reference :o).
I really like it when a British or another European guest checks in although as one German lady says, it's a shame that I do not know more than "Auf wiedesen" (apologies for the poor spelling) as we live so close. She is right; I must learn a new language or at least improve my French.
I'm surprised overall by lack of people who have had obvious plastic surgery, bearing in mind this is California. Either the claims of plastic surgery are over exaggerated or they have great surgeons. Except with this one lady who looked like she had had several face lifts, permanent make up and a serious accident with the bleach bottle. I ask politely for her ID and look at her date of birth. The amount of surgery she has wasn't worth it - her old photograph was much nicer and completely natural.I can tell she knows I wanted to check her age, but hey she would have done the same.
Not everyone is a happy little bunny though. Less than a handful of guests have not been happy that there are foreigners working here though. Natammon, who is from Thailand, and I are the only foreigners working on the front desk and people have asked us why we have these jobs when there are Americans out of work.Sigh.You just have to smile (no matter what) and patiently explain that you are here on a temporary visa during the summer.
I have had a few snooty guests who try and impress (or perhaps intimidate) me with the fact that they have lots of money and live in expensive houses.Doesn't work with me though and instead of impressing me they simply remind me of Hyacinth Bucket! I have to laugh.
The American guests can be quite (unintentionally) funny. I had a very upset lady come in to the office to report that one of the security staff had stolen her mayonnaise. She was extremely irate about it.I don't know how I held my laughter in and I was so embarrassed when calling the security guys to see if they had the mayo…possibly they ate the evidence as it was never found! Lol
All in all though they are generally friendly and interested in Nat and I.
