Monday day four . After a breakfast of waffles, fruit, maple syrup and yogurt got us off to a reasonably healthy start!! We drove the car to down town Whitefish and parked near the railway station. Trains are big in Montana and comprise of two trains and hundreds of trucks so it was good to see passenger trains. The station looks like a Disney building it was so perfect. The track stretched for miles in both directions. We spoke to a couple of Amish looking people who were so friendly. They called themselves flat landers and wanted to know what Wales was like. We went into the Main Street and had a coffee at Montana Coffee Traders. Americans use half and half milk or cream. I just wanted milk and confused the hell out of them. Lots of nice gift shops, clothes, antiques etc. The town was so clean not a sign of any rubbish or litter any where. After a few hours looking around we made our way back to the car and drove up to the ski resort of White Mountain. The summer season is over and the winter season awaits the snow. Middle of October . The ski lift and Gondolas were closed as was the high zip base wire. .. much to martins relief. We did a quick hike and left to go around Whitefish Lake. There is only a road on one side and it ends and you have to back the same way. The weather has got a bit cooler 64 degrees. The views to the lake were not clear and so going back went to whitefish beach. A man made beach. This gave us the views we wanted. The lake stretching to the tall mountains. It was very peaceful with hardly any people around. Stunning. Coming back to whitefish had lunch at Piggy Back BBQ. Martin had 3 pork belly sliders ( small buns) and I had a loaded Baker it’s bacon, cheese and sour cream. Jacket potato by any other name. The pork was in thick slices smoked over local cherry wood. Martin gave me some.... the VERY BEST PORK ever. It was delicious. Feeling fat and full we travelled back to Kalispell for Hobby Lobby. It was vast but I was good and spent ten dollars only.
Went to Safeway to buy some food for tonight. Felling tired so wanted a quiet evening. The Safeway was massive. Imagine newton Tesco but ten time bigger. Scary. Difficult to find decent food. Aisles full of cakes, sweets etc. Eventually found some fruit. On way back stopped for some ice cream, chocolate and peanut and cinnamon. Went back to duck inn. Watched some USA tv and then sleep.
