Travel with Jen and Kate!
arrived in Potosi after an 'Ãnteresting'bus journey, full of many locals and very bumpy. Not much happens in Potosi itself (its where the guys queued up to mine in The Motorcycle Diaries), its a pretty depressing little town, the main attraction being going down the silver mines and watching what happens. That really didnt appeal to us (seeing 11 year olds mine) so we decided to spend our 1 day here in the natural hot springs in Tarapaya just outside of Potosi. We took the ocal minibus to the area, got off where we thought they were and realised that atcually we had got off infront of the army barracks. Very daunting having soldiers with guns watch our every move! we inquired to where the spring were and got pointed in the direction of a hill, but instead of walking up it blindly we got on the next bus that passed. this time we were dropped off at the bottom of a hill and told to walk/scramble up the rocks. at the top was a lovely little hot pool! the only person in the area was a little old man that lived in a shack beside it. we then went to find the main pool over the hill, and spent lots of time swimming around the deep water (again with only a few old men hanging around). getting back was another adventure in itself! at the bottom of the hill we tried to hail every bus that a passed (about 1 every 10 mins) but they were all full. eventually the man we were waiting beside told us to walk along the road for 20 mins and wait at an intersection....this worked and we eventually made it back to potosi. the hostel was really nice so we spent the night chatting to people and watching films.
