Well, now that I've waited too long since we were on the road, I have to try and remember where the heck we went and what we did.
We started out from Georgia in late June to just sight see a whole bunch of crazy stuff I found on the computer. We knew that it would be awhile until we'd be traveling again since we'd agreed to house sit in Louisiana for 5 months....WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING?????? But we'll get to that at the end.
We have tried to travel the back roads this entire time but there are back roads and then there are country back roads....what a difference! The towns we went through on this leg of the adventure were so small they didn't even have a gas station or a place to eat but it was awesome.
In Georgia we wanted to eat at the first Stuckey's ever built in Eastman. If you've ever been on a road trip with the family, you know about Stuckey's and there famous pecan logs. We found Stuckey's or maybe I should say the sign in the parking lot telling us this is where the first one was. The operative word here is was. It's now a bike and leather shop which wasn't all bad except that I was still hungry. The rest of our travels in Georgia went pretty much like that one. It consisted of a Titan 1 Missile in a convenience store parking lot, the largest peanut in the world (not sure that ones true), a really big cow, a grand canyon that really wasn't all that grand (150 feet deep and so overgrown there really wasn't a canyon), Billy Carter's Museum (closed of course) and a heart wrenching stop at Andersonville National Cemetary. I learned more about the Civil War than I ever wanted to. The one thing that really stuck with me is out of the 45,000 Union soldiers that were interned there, 29% died there. Probably a stop I will never forget even if I didn't have the pictures.
Alabama was full of stupid fun and more. We traveled to Dothan, home of the 4 foot peanut. More than 50 of them all around the town and we spent a day and a half trying to find them. Of course they can't give you a comprehensive map, that would spoil all the fun. A very novel way the city found to generate income and help the businesses' with advertising. The next leg was by far the best. On our way to Clayton, we ran across an artist who did the most amazing work which was displayed in his front yard. There wasn't anything in this town but maybe a post office but what a treat to find. It took us awhile to find what we were looking for in Clayton but it was so worth it. A tombstone shaped like a whiskey bottle with a wonderful story to go with it. Mr. Mullen, who died in 1868, wouldn't quit drinking so Mrs. Mullen decided to humiliate him after his death with this very unique tombstone. I think Mr. Mullen got the last laugh since we loved it.
We had one last treat before ending our trip....
We took a detour to Ocean Springs, Mississippi so we could eat at The Shed, highlighted on the travel channel. This amazing young man started a BBQ stand by dumpster diving for everything from wood for the walls to chairs to decorations. I can honestly say it's the best BBQ we've ever eaten. It was amazing! It wasn't cheap but it wasn't over priced either which is a rare treat on the road.
When we got to Cottonport and our house sitting gig, we had some major adjusting to do. The home is literally on a hundred acres, the dirt drive way is a half mile long, the gravel road to the main road is 3 miles, and then it's another 10 into town! The only fast food within 30 miles is Subway. That's ok until you've eaten it twenty times! There are a couple of bars in the area but the locals are just what you'd expect....racist. Not a good mix for me when I'm drinking so we decided it was best to drink at home. The home is great and we love the wildlife. Especially the ones living in the kitchen. I've named the lizards and the frog. The remoteness has taken it's toll and for Dave's sanity (since I've gone nuts out here), we are leaving a month early. We'll be back on the road October 26th and hopefully back home to Vegas for a few days the first week of November, maybe....it's been so long since we've traveled, that we may just flip a coin and head somewhere else.....I need more pictures!!!!
