We came to Perth at the perfect time. The Perth festival was going on the weather was beautiful and the city was full of people. The hostel we stayed in was an old army's barrack and it was situated right in front of the festival ground and we immediately met a handful of nice and fun people to hang out with. What do you want more? That is also the reason why we stayed over a week instead of 3 or 4 days we initially planned to stay. Ok and a little bit also because we kind of were to lazy to go and hire a car in advance and so the day we went for it, there were no cars left to hire because of a long weekend and a public holiday in Australia. We decided that that would not be a problem, we would just extend our stay at the hostel and stay in Perth for the long weekend. But that sounded easier than it actually was. There were absolutely no hostels or even hotels left. So we walked through Perth and asked at every hostel whether they had a cancellation or maybe a couch we could crash on. After a couple of hours we finally found a place to stay which was dirty and disgusting but they had beds, so we took it. We had the best time going out and listening to the concerts sitting on the hostel's roof that weekend and relaxing at Perth' beautiful beaches during the day. Sometimes plans are made to be destroyed in order to let 'coincidences' happen. The best experiences always come unexpected. You can't plan them, so don't bother trying. We go with the flow and take whatever opportunity comes up.
Apropos coincidences, I found a book in cairns on the market, I immediately liked although I had never heared of that American author. I was sitting in Perth in the hostel and an older man sitting beside me suddenly asked me whether I liked the book, I was reading. We talked a bit and he told me that he had had the author over for dinner at his house in New Zealand. How crazy is that??? Somebody from
New zealand, a German traveler, an American book from Cairns have to meet in Perth to discover how they are conncected. Crazy!!!!
But well, if this journey taught me one thing, than that there is no such thing as coincidence, everything happens for a reason.
So after having rented a car eventually we went off in a mini roadtrip to the pinnacle desert and to the southwestern part of Australia, Margaret River, the wine region. We explored beautiful beaches, tasted wine, explored million year old caves and finally saw some cangaroos hopping in the fields by the side of the road. After three days we were back in Perth in our beloved hostel for another weekend of beach and dancing to live music. That's a thing we really love about Australian nightlife. There is live music everywhere even in nightclubs.
Right now we are sitting on the 'Indian-Pacific-Railway' from Perth to Adelaide where we will stay two days and two nights driving through the outback. Doesn't that sound super romantic?
p.s.
the train journey was indeed super romantic. We discovered that you can share one tiny plastic spoon to eat all the meals if you have to. It can be a knife, a fork or even a spoon if you want it to be so.
The seats were more comfortable than we thought and arriving in Adelaide we were nearly disappointed how quickly it went. We came through deserts, some ghost cities and some cities that had - wait for it- three inhabitants!!! Wow! There was an article in the train's magazine about this one lady living in Cook (the city with three inhabitants) and she answered the question, why she is still living in this city after everybody else had left, that she now can listen to her Rock'n Roll music as loud as she wants to. You have to be somewhat quirky to live there - I guess.
Sunsets and sunrises were beautiful in the outback and with a bit of luck you could have seen some cangaroos (we didn't ).
We stayed two days in Adelaide where - again - the yearly festival was going on and we saw some nice street music and a comedy show about beeing German (http://pacoerhard.com/). Really funny guy, if you ever have the chance to see him live, go for it, he is really good.
And, by the way, Adelaide has 9 1/2 hours of time difference to Germany. Did you know, they were doing half hours? How weird is that?
Now we are on the road again from Adelaide to Melbourne. Tonight we will sleep in jail, Esther was a naughty girl .
And the best news to finish this blog entry: Lena is coming to Australia!!! She booked her flight yesterday and today she is already on the way, that crazy chick. The universe listened to our wishes. You should try it too ;).
