The New Year starts with a week in tropical paradise but somehow it feels like if Tahiti doesn't like us.
We arrive after a long flight late at night at Papeete airport and for the first time during the whole trip my backpack got lost. I think no worries, such things happen but just getting out of the building Tahiti brings on the next thing: Somehow Kirstins bank card doesn't work, so she can't get any cash. Together we form one decent traveller, she has the clothes and I have the money. Next thing we get a cab and drive to our hostel where after the taxi driver had left, it turns out that it's the wrong hostel and more some kind of hotel. We manage to bargain the price down to 50€ which is soooo expensive considering the type of room we get for our money, but its late at night, the taxi has already left and we are tired, so we stay.
Oh and of course during all that, its raining.
Next morning starts better, the sun is shining, Tahiti looks beautiful and our ferry and bus ride to the camping on Moorea island, where we want to stay the next 5 days, is going smoothly. At noon we are already in our bathing suits (well I am actually in Kirstins spare bikini) walking at the beautiful beach and worrying where to lie down so that no coconut would fall on our heads (seriously that is an issue on Tahiti). The camping is great, right beside the beach and we are making plans what to do the next days...snorkeling, renting a scooter, canoing, shark watching...we actually worry that we will not have enough time to do everything we want to.
But everything is gonna be so different from what we think at that point ...
Next morning it is raining but we don't mind because anyway I have to stay at the camping because my backpack is about to arrive and we think, well it is raining season, so it has got to rain at some point. But it keeps raining all day and we don't do much. And it is not just a bit rain, but that tropical rain when it is pouring down and you are soaked in seconds.
Day 2 on Moorea starts about the same, it is raining, but at least it stops for some time so we can go swimming.
In the afternoon we start drinking wine because it is raining again.
Day 3... Guess what? It is raining! So we actually start drinking at noon ;). The Tahitian people who are on the camping, pack their stuff and leave because they say that the rain is not going to stop for days... But we are still optimistic and don't believe it.
Day 4 is actually worse than the first two because now strong wind joins the rain. We try to rent a car to actually do something and at least see the island, but it is Sunday and everything is closed...
On our last Day we rent that car and go around the island despite of the rain but that is all we can do.
Next day we leave Moorea to spend one last night in Papeete before taking the plane to New Zealand and guess what??? The Sun is shining!!! But at that point we cannot even be mad about it because that phase has already passed in day three ;). At least we are not getting wet with our backpacks on.
