So it began, the Indian Christmas adventure! First stop Delhi..
DELHI... Now, does anyone actually need to visit here!? Culture shock for one so white, blonde, female with blue eyes! Not sure what I had in mind but it certainly wasn't this, it was going to be a long few days waiting for the arrival of my partner in crime!
The first thing that hits you as you step off the plane is the smell,a strange mix of incense & burning waste! You soon get used to this so that want my worry.
I began by making a journey to what I thought would be a great little guest house, well this is what the reviews led me to believe.. but before this I had to manage my way through the hoards of people, a sign of things to come! Poor paid taxis's are the way forward here as everyone is on the look out to rip you off!!
Once out of the airport the smell gets stronger but by no means unbearable.. into the taxis& off to join the other millions tooting their horns constantly! Apparently I'd your not tooting, your not driving ad both come hand in hand! Noisy, busy, hectic & unfriendly.. Welcome to Delhi!
Despite all of this I remained positively excited by the opportunity to explore somewhere completely new! I couldn't wait to get started...
My hostel/guesthouse was the s***s! Awful place, terrible staff who didn't care or show any interest in helping out, just saw you as a nuisance in their building. The rooms smelt mouldy, the bathroom unclean, water cold despite being advertised as hot, internet connection unreliable & expensive! But we'll get on with it in good old fashioned British spirit!
I set out on my first day in search of a reliable source to book train tickets to Agra & then Jaipur, easier said than done.. EVERYBODY wants to rip you off, trust no one became my motto in Delhi! I could not wait to get out of this place...
Positive; A home cooked Delhi course, fantastic experience visiting an regular Indian family to learn to cook traditional Indian cuisine! A wonderful experience, although not sure I remember much other than I ate enough food for 10!! & it was so so so good!
Positive; Tuk-tuk experience.. flying around on auto rickshaw/ordinary rickshaws was fantastic! Especially in this traffic! Millions on the roads every day, on their horns!! & driving wherever they like, two lanes easily became 3 or 4! I thought Kenya driving was bad, that's nothing compared to this!! But being in our on a rickshaw meant that no one could hound me for photo's, dates or follow me, touch me... quite incredible really.. I did embrace the photo's, outstanding in my own head I was intact famous & this was normal behavior!!
Positive; Food!! No Indian is as good as from India itself! The flavours, all the different spices & feeling in your mouth.. I did not get bored of eating Indian food for the entire the weeks!!
Sarah arrived just in time& we went straight to Agra!! I could not get out of Delhi soon enough!! If I hadn't have been waiting for Sarah I would have left long before!
The experience got 100 times better one I had back up! The photo requests kept coming but this time Sarah would just deflect the situation by taking their photo for them.. minus me!!
