Siena, Italy
16th - 18th July
So we arrived time to check into our two person mixed dorm! we were quickly confused when we were told where our dorm was but weren't handed a key.... we stood waiting for a second until he told us we were done!?! Confused we asked for a key only to be told you don't need one, he then asked if we would like a lantern? Our immediate response was "how much?" he replied free just return in when you leave. Now really confused. So our booking details said we would be staying in a two bed mixed dorm... We had a feeling this wasn't the case as there was no key and a lantern for a light, Were we sleeping outside? The answer is no if you look at the photo's you can see that we were infant not staying in a traditional dorm we had an ex-jap or Chinese army tent. Needless to say this wasn't what we were expecting but none the less it was double the size of the tents in Rome and Venice and only slept two.
Our camp had an extra surprise which wasn't advertised.... A really really swimming pool which was 12 feet deep which is a little crazy and spotlessly clean, it's only let down was if you actually wanted to go into the pool you could only do so wearing a swimming cap! Top things off the only colours they had left to buy where pink and purple, Cobi got the pink one and Liam the purple. And yes we all looked a little silly!
So Siena... It is a very pretty place with a very typical Italian feel. Not a great deal to see though as it is a very small place, amazing if you have a lot of money and love to shop but if your travelling on a budget like us its not so good. None the less the town has a lot of history and is a great place to just wonder around getting a little lost. Sadly we missed Siena main attraction by about two weeks eitherway, as twice a year they close the main square get tons and tons of sand from somewhere put it on the ground and have a horse race! This is a very traditional race and a big deal in Siena as they close everything and thousands of people pile into the middle of the square to watch the race. So what do you get if you win such a traditional and prestigious race? Nothing, that is other than bragging rights. The winner takes full advantage of this as every night for about a month they parade around the square in full traditional wear on the winning horse celebrating there win.
OK so Siena is a very traditional place that unless we win the lottery and wont to do a bit of shopping, or we become massive horse racing fans, we don't think we shall be back.
Next on our travels is a short stop in Florence.
