I have only been here twelve hours but Neha had to stop into work for a conference call (she took two weeks off of work for me, so I figure I will let this slide). So I have to entertain myself on the computer and therefor am writing a mini update....
Flights and everything went very smoothly, I got here with no problems. My layover in Heathrow was very interesting. Heathrow is now set-up with an entirely separate terminal (that you take a train to get to) for all flights going to the US, I assume so tha it can have the extra security required. Kind of crazy that we are powerful enough to require airports to do that for us!
For all connections, not going to the US, everyone now has to go through security a second time, with a whole separate check point just for liquids, it was kind of hilarious, everyone was chugging their leftover waters and wines from their first flights.
When I arrived Neha and Rahul were waiting to pick me up and Rahul gave me a mini tour on the ride to Neha's house. The tour ended with the State House, which he explained was basically their White House and then pointed to the house across from it and was like and there's Neha's house, I laughed, and then realized he was serious. Then Neha and I basically crashed... after she explained to me that we couldn't leave her bedroom area because the security system for the whole house turns on at night and will be set off it I went out into the hall. Intense.
It down poured all night, rainy season in Kenya seems to have come early this year. It is going to make for an interesting mountain climb! In the middle of the night we were both awoken by a bunch of these huge explosion sounds going off in a row. Neha gets up to look out the window, and I, (keep in mind jet lagged, just finished 24 hours of travel, kind of out of it), ask if they were gunshots (guards shooting wild animals, I don't know..). I think she may forever make fun of me for the question, but I swear, and she will back me up, that's what it sounded like. But she determined that it was electricity going out from the rain. In the morning her Mom claimed it was lightning, and we decided it must have hit something cause it was way crazier than normal lightning, or I decided that the lightning in Kenya is very strange and different than any other lightning I have heard!
This morning we went to a nearby mall to get some food and then came to Neha's office because she had phone conference she had to do today. Then we are going to just run a few errands to prepare for our rainy climb that starts tomorrow!!
In general, first impressions of Nairobi... smaller than expected, very few tall buildings, if you can even call the tall ones tall, not as poor as expected (though between Bangladesh, India, Peru and Indonesia,I guess I have some kind of standard for my poor scale), it doesn't smell at all which surprised me, there aren't many bugs, and there was even semi-normal ketchup at breakfast, all in all I am a fan!
The next five days we'll be climbing Mt. Kenya, so hopefully I will get an update in after that!
