Tessa awoke to a very upset stomach but decided to join us for local sightseeing anyway. Unfortunately, while walking to the metro station, Tessa's stomach started to act up, so she and Barry headed back to the hotel. However, when the rest of us arrived at the station and looked up the stairs, there was Barry and Tessa! Tessa had decided that she'd just "power-through" despite being sick and, as usual, we were very proud of her.
The metro system of Delhi was…beautiful. Yes, really! Clean, efficient, well organized, clearly laid out, and far easier to navigate than many European ones! No shoving, groping, rudeness or crowds like we've seen on TV. It was great!
We took the metro to Old Delhi to see the Jama Masjid or Friday Mosque, so called because it functions as a congregational Mosque on Fridays. It's India's largest mosque, and can hold 25,000 worshippers. We wandered around and Barry, Connor and Margaret climbed the tower. Although only about 3% of India's population is Muslim, this place is too impressive to skip. Tessa had a few more bad moments in the mosque but she handled them well and we were very glad she didn't miss out.
Afterwards, we all walked through Old Delhi and had some masala chai (tea with milk, sugar, and spices) from a street vendor in a back alley. The power lines were only inches above our heads, as were the monkeys! We also tried some Indian sweets, which were buttery but good.
After that, we walked through the spice market. We were supposed to end at Connaught Place but, because we'd already been there, we went back to the hotel to let Tessa recover. We got plenty of water into her and by evening she was, as far as we could tell, fully recovered.
We spent the evening booking our flights to Melbourne, Cairns, and…eek...home.
