Barry went on a beach fact-finding mission this morning, considering we've heard rumours of people actually having sex in public at some of them. Unfortunately, he couldn't find out which ones specifically.
Just kidding… we wanted to find a family-safe beach. We eventually settled on Paradise Beach - wild but not too wild, well known back home, but where straight families can go and keep their clothes on.
We had a great breakfast at a restaurant down the street from our hotel, and then bought tickets for the bus (6 euros each way for the family), and went to the grocery store to pick up some snacks and drinks for the beach. The beach was a little wilder than we were used to. About 50 percent of the women were topless. The beach is framed by a series of cocktail bars where the music plays all day. We were smart to bring our own provisions, as daiquiris were on special for two (small) drinks for 9 euros (we were still tempted enough to order a couple!). Renting two lounge chairs and an umbrella was too expensive for us at 12 euros each so, as usual, we pulled out our little Italian beach mat and a few towels to enjoy a great afternoon.
We weren't completely sheltered from the wind, but the waves were minimal which made Tessa happy. The sand was easy on the feet, the first 25 feet of water was shallow, and past that was a 12 foot wide reef. Once past the reef, we were in deep, beautifully clear water. Connor, Tessa and Barry swam beneath, checking out the schools of black and white and rainbow coloured fish. Barry got bit or stung by something in the water which left a huge welt the size of his hand on his lower back. It worried Margaret, but luckily, it healed up pretty quickly in a few days.
Although we've grown used to topless women, this beach was completely nude at the far end, and "ugly naked guy" was happy to walk the entire beach end to end. Thankfully, Tessa missed the show!
We stayed all day and had a great time swimming and reading. If you haven't read Lamb by Christopher Moore, it is hilarious!
One of the best things about this beach was its great party atmosphere, which heightened as the afternoon progressed. At precisely 5:00 p.m., the music got much louder, the table dancers started dancing, and we thought it would be best to head home before it got really wild!
That evening, we went out for supper at a restaurant called Marco Polo's. It was a nice meal, but we've realized that Edmonton Greek restaurants such as Koutouki Taverna, Yianni's Taverna, or Grub Med are just as good (or better), with more food at a lower price.
After dinner, we told the kids to go to bed so we could go out, as we haven't had much time alone. We went to three or four clubs and had fun dancing to 2007 tunes and laughing at the retro tunes from the '80s. It was a lot of fun and we got home very late that night, knowing we'd tried to do Mykonos justice.
